As the extra-long weekend returns, the State Workers Association holds protests across the country that include possible takeovers of public buildings. It is in rejection of the more than 11,000 layoffs in the national administration

Incidents in the Inadi
On the first business day after the extra-long weekend for Easter and Veteran's Day and those who fell in the Malvinas War, the national protest began promoted by the Association of State Workers (ATE) in rejection of the more than 11,000 layoffs in the national administration. The measure began after 9 a.m. and includes, in addition to a national strike, a massive entry into different public offices .

The first moments of tension were experienced at the Inadi headquarters, when minutes after 10, the group of dismissed workers managed to overcome the police fence that a group of agents had formed and managed to enter the building. Later, the Infantry arrived at the doors of the place to reinforce guard. The same situation exists in other buildings where different state agencies operate.

Both the Federal Police and Buenos Aires troops are stationed in each of the public buildings such as the Chancellery, the National Meteorological Service, the former Ministry of Labor and the Conicet headquarters, among others. The protests are also replicated in some parts of the rest of the country.

In the midst of the protests, the presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, stated that “the number is around 15,000 contracts that have not been renewed” and assured that “it is part of the work to reduce State expenses, personnel that do not need to be "Do not continue collecting income from the State, on the other side there is a taxpayer who pays it."

During his usual press conference at the Casa Rosada, the spokesperson warned those who protest: “ Whatever is outside the law will have the corresponding consequences in each case.”

In the preview, the general secretary of the union, Rodolfo Aguiar, assured: " The President has decided to break the Argentine legal system at its core and both he and his officials could end up in prison." According to the count carried out over the weekend by the union, the layoffs amount to 11,000 throughout the public administration, a number that is close to the 15,000 that President Milei claimed to have reached during his administration.

“Provoking massive layoffs in the State is suppressing fundamental rights of people and that is conduct classified in our Penal Code ,” argued the union leader.

Then, he continued: “Violating the guarantee of stability provided for in Article 14 bis of the National Constitution tens of thousands of times, in turn causes the suppression of other fundamental rights that the entire society has. And our Penal Code, in its article 226, gives sentences of between 5 and 15 years to those who prevent the free exercise of constitutional powers .”

Aguiar described how the day will unfold. “Tomorrow at 4 p.m. we convene a Federal Plenary with more than 1,000 delegates to deepen the fight plan. We have to demonstrate that it is the Government that acts outside the Constitution and the law. In the morning, the workers with our massive and simultaneous income will be exercising our rights to strike, demonstrate and meet. If there is violence and repression, the only person responsible will be the Casa Rosada,” the leader closed in his X profile.

In advance of the protest, the general secretary of ATE Capital, Daniel “Tano” Catalano , told FM La Patriada: “Our colleagues are co-workers, they are not the Praetorian Guard. We're not going to break up. The social imagination that Minister Bullrich has is that of someone very fanciful; "She needs a warlike action and they will carry it out, we are not going to provoke an action that could put our companions at risk."

This minister is a showman who needs to show blood . My colleagues do not need to be beaten and put in prison,” she added.

The other union in the sector, the Union of Civil Personnel of the Nation (UPCN), chose a different strategy to protest against the adjustment and layoffs in the State: it will carry out specific protests in the agencies affected by the cuts, such as the ANSES and the ministries of Labor and Health, among others, with assemblies and batucadas to express their demands. Sources from the union led by Andrés Rodríguez anticipated that they could carry out strikes of 2 or 4 hours, although a 24-hour strike is not planned at the moment, much less the occupation of buildings, like ATE.

Faced with this situation, the national government, together with that of the City of Buenos Aires, is preparing a security operation to prevent the takeover of public offices located in the Capital. Furthermore, in the last few hours, the Minister of Defense, Luis Petri, warned that the Executive will criminally report those who try to take over buildings.

“Those who try to take over public buildings will be criminally denounced and we will take them to the ultimate consequences . ” “They should be held responsible, the time has come for those who commit crimes to be held responsible. The rule of law is for everyone,” he added during an interview on TN.
"We are going to take them to the last consequences. Let them take responsibility," said the Minister of Defense
Since the arrival of Javier Milei to the Casa Rosada, thousands of agents of the national public administration lost their jobs. The Government of La Libertad Avanza attributes these charges to the retribution of favors to political activists from Peronist spaces such as La Cámpora . Furthermore, they argue that their presence in the State was not based on a need to provide a specific service.

Furthermore, the head of state pointed out that the cut in these first three months of administration is only the beginning of a policy that will deepen until eliminating 70 thousand jobs that are currently on the payroll of different areas of the national Executive Branch.

ATE denies these arguments and points out that it has not been possible to prove that they are “gnocchi”, a nickname popularly received by people who receive a salary without showing up for work. “Unfortunately, we are in that number with colleagues who have been there for more than 20 years. We did not find criteria to be able to fire,” the union lamented.
