Meat-loving Argentines shun beef as inflation bites

Sad to see many are having to cut back on beef purchases. Several I know have mentioned that to me.

True. Many are eating more chicken. During the holidays it seems like prices are spiking up even more.

They might be cutting back but they eat much more than most other countries in the world. Europe only averages about 10 to 20 kilos per year while Argentina is still 50 kilos!

i only buy chicken or pork in the usa. beef has been high for at least 2 years. i love beef but choke on it when i see the price
It has gotten very expensive in the USA. When I visit my folks I get sticker shock. But in some of the fine restaurants in BA, steaks are also expensive. A relative bargain at the supermarket still in BA.

What does a steak restaurant meal cost these days in BA, say for two people with bottle of wine? I keep hearing how much prices have gone up there since my visit last year.

Is this "cheap chicken" in the room with us now ... Plain chicken breasts at my local carrefour are still expensive and awful quality compared to back home. I understand if people are giving up meat due to cost or living but switching to chicken in BA doesn't seem any cheaper to me unless I'm living in an alternative reality

It depends where you go. Don Julio you can spend $300 to $400 for two people with appetizers and a nice bottle of wine.
No doubt but they're not a great comparison. When I was there Don Julio was on par with higher end Texas steakhouses whereas El Preferido and others were quite cheap (not surprisingly Don Julio was dead while the other places were packed). Also alcohol at US steakhouses is really expensive, a bottle of wine here is multiples of what we paid in BA, beers are $9-12, cocktails $18-25. That is before you add 30% for taxes & tip.

Wine in BA is much much much cheaper than restaurants in the USA, especially top tier steakhouses. Tipping epidemic is also nut in USA. I went to visit my sister in Los Angeles over Christmas and most of the restaurants already had a 6% extra fee on the check for healthcare for employees. WTF?

I went to Madre Rojas several times and prices weren't all too much cheaper than steaks at nice places here in Dallas. The last time I was in BA the price to eat at a mediocre place or neighborhood joint wasn't too much less than a nicer tier restaurant.

Drink prices are so high here in the United States. At many places a high end drink costs as much as food!

Besides the higher end restaurants you can still get good value. This was at La Dorita in Palermo Chico. I went with my girlfriend who wasn't too hungry and her cousin who didn't eat much so it was mostly me eating a Rib Eye. You can see it was 39,500 pesos which was only about $30. Quality was just ok. This is a very reasonable priced place.

Wow that isn't bad at all. With the higher exchange rate it looks like prices are holding steady. This is more of a neighborhood place. I have been there before. Good value. They have another seafood restaurant in Palermo which is ok. Seafood in BA isn't too good but have had some good meals at their sister restaurant in Hollywood.

What are wine prices like at nice places these days in BA?

Don Julio you can get in now with no reservation. That was unheard of just a few years ago. I don't think it is worth it today. Just full of tourists.
