Meat-loving Argentines shun beef as inflation bites

Sad to see many are having to cut back on beef purchases. Several I know have mentioned that to me.

True. Many are eating more chicken. During the holidays it seems like prices are spiking up even more.

They might be cutting back but they eat much more than most other countries in the world. Europe only averages about 10 to 20 kilos per year while Argentina is still 50 kilos!

i only buy chicken or pork in the usa. beef has been high for at least 2 years. i love beef but choke on it when i see the price
It has gotten very expensive in the USA. When I visit my folks I get sticker shock. But in some of the fine restaurants in BA, steaks are also expensive. A relative bargain at the supermarket still in BA.

What does a steak restaurant meal cost these days in BA, say for two people with bottle of wine? I keep hearing how much prices have gone up there since my visit last year.

It depends where you go. Don Julio you can spend $300 to $400 for two people with appetizers and a nice bottle of wine.

Is this "cheap chicken" in the room with us now ... Plain chicken breasts at my local carrefour are still expensive and awful quality compared to back home. I understand if people are giving up meat due to cost or living but switching to chicken in BA doesn't seem any cheaper to me unless I'm living in an alternative reality

No doubt but they're not a great comparison. When I was there Don Julio was on par with higher end Texas steakhouses whereas El Preferido and others were quite cheap (not surprisingly Don Julio was dead while the other places were packed). Also alcohol at US steakhouses is really expensive, a bottle of wine here is multiples of what we paid in BA, beers are $9-12, cocktails $18-25. That is before you add 30% for taxes & tip.
