Expat Life: Local Discoveries, Global Connections

It looks like April is going to go up about 15% across most healthcare plans too. No telling when this is going to stop but people are hurting with these huge increases in a quick amount of time.
It is getting out of hand. Mine notified me that it is going up 20% next month. My premium has gone up over 200% in just a few months. My friends private school tuition has also skyrocketed. If Milei's purpose is to get all of us to break out our USD cash from mattresses it is working!

It is not just medical premium that go up. Prescription and medicine prices skyrocketing. In 4 months it go up almost 150%!

It is getting crazy. My sister in law told me her OSDE bill for April is over $800 US dollars now for her and her husband. OSDE 410 plan. They are on the verge of having to cancel it if it goes up at these rates. She said by June she will have to drop it if it keeps going up.

I myself am with Swiss Medical and my bill for next month is 100% more than it was from 4 months ago. I am at the breaking point. Last week I went to go talk to the office to see about cancelling or downgrading. I told them I couldn't afford these payments as my bill is now approaching $900 USD (900,000 pesos). They told me I could drop down a tier level and it dropped the price about 50%.

So that may be an option vs. cancelling.

This is the new normal. I'm paying over $750 now. Healthcare prices will never go back to what we were paying. Subsidies and good ole days are over in Argentina. Utilities are going up 300% and they will probably continue to keep going up. Sure there is a tipping point and people are cancelling their policies but I am not sure the companies care. Many people will keep paying the higher premiums as they know there is no choice. Some are cancelling to go on public plans but there is a night and day difference. And may people are sick and have medical conditions and they aren't going to cancel. This is all planned.

@Billy Goat, thanks. That is a good discount. What changed in the lower tiered plan?

Well the discount is only for 6 months they say. And they said that price might be subjected to inflation increases that may be announced as well. They didn't say it was locked in. The main difference was it was no co-pay and now I have to pay co-pays when I go in for bloodwork, any x-rays or tests. They also suggested that for medications that are required for me to take daily for the remainder of my life, I have my doctor fill out a form. They said that once he fills out the form then I will be entitled to a further discount on the prescriptions as I complained about the higher inflated cost of those too.

It seems like they do not want to lose clients so they already are working to downgrade clients vs. having them cancel. Try to call or visit your provider

This is a good idea. I would have to believe many are thinking about cancelling their policies or downgrading. Most of the expats I know are older and on fixed incomes off their Social Security payments. I am with Medicus and like all of you it is painful. Milei needs to be careful now because I am seeing many complain about this. Especially many people that voted for him. Once the social unrest starts with the people he is firing and all the people that were already against him and Peronistas you are going to have everyone else piling on. It could go very wrong for him very quickly.

There are now some class action lawsuits going on now. I don't know if they will result in any changes. But you can read this article. If you're with OSDE or Hospital Italiano you can join in the lawsuit.

Lawsuits here take about a decade to get resolved. I honestly believe that all these healthcare companies don't care if people leave the plan. Try getting an appointment to visit your doctor and all of a sudden it is impossible to get in for an appointment. For my doctor the next appointment is August and for a specialist they want me to wait until November! I never had this issue before. Maybe everyone is rushing to see doctors before they raise the prices or make people pay a co-pay like the US.

This is true. I tried getting a dermatologist appointment and it has been impossible. I can't wait so I will just pay out of pocket even though I am paying a small fortune with my prepago. This is not right.

The Government is considering going to court against the "prepagas" companies for alleged "abusive consuct"...

I hope some entity will take care of regulating it for God's sake, a lot of people are simply dropping out because they can't support it.

I hope so @tyler33! It is a crime what they are doing.

These lawsuits along with the government threatening action seems to be working. I just got an email stating that my prepago will NOT be raised in May. The first time in a few months that the premium hasn't jumped up tremendously.

Yep. It looks like everyone complaining is working. They are going to roll back the prices. I will believe it when I see it in my bill.

You all can't say Milei didn't do anything for you!

At least it's a good start, let's hope it works in our favor.

Yesterday, the Executive ordered that 75% of prepaid medicine companies lower the price of their fees, since they will have to recalculate the increases they applied since December taking the Consumer Price Index as a basis for the calculation. At the same time, the Health Superintendency presented a precautionary measure before the Court to return money to users.

I read there was some backlash against foreigners receiving free public healthcare but I didn't read anything about private medical insurance. I don't have any DNI or residency status here. Can I still buy a health plan from any of these providers? Will they sell me a plan? Any help would be appreciated.

Earlier last year you could buy a policy without DNI with Swiss Medical and Medicus but you may want to call or email them to see. Maybe wait to sign up once they roll back the prices IF they do that.
