‘Strap in’: Imports surge and markets fear return of ‘libertarian Milei’

I doubt local manufacturers can compete against the Chinese. Talked to an amiga and she talks about all her friends buying Shein. No amount of local companies can compete against those companies from China. I always wondered about this and how it turns out.

These companies were never competitive. They were overpriced and poor quality. Too much protectionism and taxes. Consumers are loving the lower pries and doubt they care where these items are produced and care more about price.

Without this protectionism these local companies had to get competitive but they never did. Prices were outrageous. Instead of making money on volume they were always overpriced. I applaud Milei for bringing competition and making these Argentine companies compete. The problem with this is many locals are losing their jobs and more will close down.

True and many foreign companies are pulling out of Argentina because it does not make sense. Add Whirlpool to the list that announced they will stop producing items in Argentina. Can't make money.

Plain facts my friend!

i have never understood why the americas don’t just develop resources within the continent. we have cheap labor, resources and the ability introduce curiculum in the universitys to satisfy what ever a company needs. add free trade and boom you just saved a bunch of money on the boat ride and import taxes. sounds like a big advantage to me and create jobs in the process

can’t tell me the gov or individual companies can’t buy a factory from asia and ship it over with foreign workers adept at operating it until you catch up

you have a great university and rare earth minerals. lets start with chip manufacturing
Sure just need a couple decades of intensive education and training, borrow another $50 billion to construct large scale operations, change the official work week to 6 days/80 hours and eliminate all public holidays. Argentina you've got this!

I think all agree the turn around in Argentina will take a tremendous amount of time.

degrees in engineering or coding or ai are 4 year degrees in the us. you can volunteer for summer jobs with companies you wand to work for. with all the savings from boat rides and import fees you probably could afford to pay a reasonable wage with a 40 hour work week. you can have 3 shifts at 40 hours. no reason to mistreat the workers. its
possible iif we open our minds and push for it. don’t forget companies will invest in good opportunities

i used to build data centers both ac and dc. we used air to cool things down. water is a choice and me personally i don’t like cooling down electronics with water.

Argentina seems like it has a high amount of educated and skilled labor. If I understand things correctly that isn't the issue but the labor and employment laws and tax system that is jacked up in Argentina that needs to be fixed that Milei is trying to fix in the upcoming months.
