One of the problems that most affects Argentines when thinking about choosing a neighborhood to move to is insecurity . The more unsafe an area is perceived to be, the less likely it is to be chosen as a place to live .

The larger a city is, the more unsafe it tends to be . What about Buenos Aires ? According to data extracted from the latest 2023 report from the City Government, its rate of robbery and theft was the highest of all districts in Argentina. However, as mentioned above, it's important to clarify that the rest of the districts include areas with lower population density .

Despite this situation, when looking at the number of murders, Buenos Aires City is one of the safest cities in Latin America. However, within this city, the situation varies greatly by area: some neighborhoods offer much safer conditions than others, with significantly lower crime rates .

Despite this data, not all neighborhoods in the city are the same. Crime rates vary widely. As a result, LA NACION Data conducted a survey of the Buenos Aires district to determine how safe the area you're in is , based on the 2023 Crime Map prepared by the Buenos Aires government (a database that includes all police incidents reported in the city, along with their geolocation).

According to the data collected, in 2023 there were a total of 62,567 total thefts and 64,983 total robberies . If only theft, robbery, and homicide are considered, in 2023, the city of Buenos Aires had 127,641 cases. This represents an average of 350 incidents of insecurity per day: 180 robberies and 170 thefts. Meanwhile, the average number of homicides is one every four days.

The safest areas in CABA

According to the survey, the municipalities with the lowest percentage of crimes relative to their population are:

  • Commune 6 (Caballito) : This is the safest district in the entire city. Only 4.21% of crimes in Buenos Aires City occurred there. The rate was 2,646 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants.
  • Commune 12 (Coghlan, Saavedra, Villa Urquiza, Villa Pueyrredón) : It is also among the quietest areas, with 4.52% of the total and a rate of 2,434 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants.
  • Commune 10 (Vila Real, Monte Castro, Versalles, Floresta, Vélez Sarsfield, Villa Luro) : recorded 4.53% of the total, with 3,342 crimes per 100,000 people.
  • Commune 11 (Villa General Mitre, Villa Devoto, Villa del Parque, Villa Santa Rita) : accumulated 4.95% of the total crimes, with a rate of 3,089 per 100,000 inhabitants.

These neighborhoods are notable for having less traffic, more residential streets, and established neighborhood structures, factors that, according to experts, directly impact safety levels.

The most unsafe areas

At the other extreme, Commune 1 , which includes Retiro, San Nicolás, Puerto Madero, San Telmo, Monserrat, and Constitución , is the most dangerous in proportion to its population . In 2023, 8% of its population was a victim of robbery or theft, equivalent to a rate of 8,000 crimes per 100,000 people.

The main reason for this figure lies not in the neighborhood's everyday life, but in its extremely high traffic: it's an area with multiple administrative centers, train stations, subways, and tourist attractions. In these places, criminals often take advantage of the congestion to snatch cell phones, wallets, or backpacks.

Some critical points include :

  • Pueyrredón and Corrientes : the most dangerous intersection of the year, with 426 robberies and thefts in 2023.
  • Constitución Station : 352 robberies and thefts.
  • Retiro Station : 306 cases.
  • The Obelisk : 380 facts.
  • Plaza de Mayo : 219 robberies and thefts.

And the homicides?

Regarding murders, 91 were recorded across the city in 2023 , a figure that has been declining in recent years. However, these incidents are concentrated in specific areas. The boroughs with the most homicides are :

  • Commune 1 (Retiro, San Nicolás, Puerto Madero, San Telmo, Montserrat and Constitución)
  • Commune 4 (La Boca, Barracas, Parque Patricios, Nueva Pompeya)
  • Commune 7 (Flores, Chacabuco Park)
  • Commune 8 (Villa Soldati, Villa Lugano, Villa Riachuelo)

Between the four, they accounted for 67 homicides, representing 73% of the total. In contrast, Commune 2 (Recoleta) was the only one that did not record a single homicide throughout the entire year .
