The Unión por la Patria bloc requested a special session for next Tuesday, April 30 at 11 a.m. to reject the DNU that Javier Milei sent at the end of 2023. The measure with which the Government seeks to deregulate the economy has already received rejection in the Senate, a reason that prompted the President to attack the opposition and accuse them of putting the May Pact at risk.

“We hereby write to you to request, pursuant to the provisions of articles 35 and 36 of the Regulations of this Honorable Chamber, that a special session be convened for Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 11 a.m. in order to address the Decree of Necessity and Urgency No. 70/2023 Bases for the Reconstruction of the Argentine Economy,” the document states.

Furthermore, they maintained: “Given that the Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Nation, on January 5, 2024, sent the Decree of Necessity and Urgency 70/2023 to the National Congress; and due to the fact that the legal period established in article 99, paragraph 3 of the National Constitution and article 19 of Law 26,122 has elapsed, without the Permanent Bicameral Commission for Legislative Procedure having issued and submitted an opinion, it is appropriate that both Chambers of Congress of the Nation are dedicated to their express and immediate treatment as established in article 20 law 26,122.

The opposition's call is not accidental. Next Monday, Deputies will begin to discuss the new version of the Base Law and the fiscal package and the debate is expected to last until Wednesday. The objective is to be able to filter out the rejection of the DNU, but it is ruled out that Peronism will get the votes. What is striking is that the statement was signed by 88 of the 99. Not signed: Máximo Kirchner, Micaela Moran, Marcela Passo, Fernanda Ávila, Dante L. Rodriguez, Sebastián Nóblega, Jorge Romero, Guillermo Snopek, Sergio Casas, Roberto Mirabella , Walberto Allende.

In mid-March, the Senate of the Nation rejected the validity of the DNU that deregulates the economy and was a trigger for Javier Milei to confront the opposition again, in the midst of negotiations for the new Omnibus Law and the May Pact. The rule received 42 votes in favor, 25 against and four abstentions. For this, the Frente de Todos joined forces, legislators who respond to anti-K governors, some dissident and radical PJs.

At that time, the president announced that the vote of the upper house put at risk the call for the May Pact that he made during the Legislative Assembly, but he went one step further in his message: “It is impossible to interpret this decision in any other way than as “an attempt to undermine the May Pact, the National Government and the change chosen by the Argentines.”

“On March 1, 2024, the President of the Nation extended an invitation, in an unprecedented historical event, to all members of the political leadership, without party distinction, to sign the May Pact,” he said in a statement. from the official account Office of the President.

“This pact constitutes a founding agreement aimed at establishing ten State policies that allow the construction of a new economic order, rescuing Argentina from the path of failure and reinserting it on the necessary path to once again be a world power. This agreement, long demanded by the political class for decades but which no one has dared to call, necessarily requires the good will of all sectors of national political life," they expressed from the Government.

Furthermore, they added: “What happened today in the Senate of the Nation violates the call of the President. The same Chamber that has enabled almost 500 Decrees of Necessity and Urgency of Kirchnerism, has been responsible for rejecting the DNU of President Javier Milei just 3 months after his inauguration.

In line with this idea, Milei launched strong words towards the opposition: “It is impossible to interpret this decision in any other way than as an attempt to undermine the May Pact, the National Government and the change chosen by the Argentines. In his speech about the state of the Nation, the President proposed two alternatives: agreement or confrontation. “The time has come for the political class to decide which side of history they want to be on.”
