Meat-loving Argentines shun beef as inflation bites

Prices for beef really have shot up lately. I just went to El Mirasol today and just an asado de tire and salad was 135,500 pesos! Just crazy.

Wow. Prices went up. I liked this restaurant. It's next to the Four Seasons isn't it? I went there. Lots of tourists there but just from end of last year I paid about 58,000 pesos for that same cut of steak. This is even one of the cheaper cuts. I can't imagine what the rib eye or better cut is. It looks like prices of beef keep going up.

I like Mirasol. Good stuff but I agree the prices continue to go up. I'd assume the Ojo de Bife (Rib eye) there now is probably over 110,000 pesos. ($79 USD) or so. That's about what I pay in San Diego for a great 16 oz Rib Eye at one of my favorite steak places Ruth's Chris in Del Mar, California near my house.

Here is a receipt from the other night so you can see the prices. Went out with my wife. Really excellent steaks and I live in one of the most expensive areas in the USA. So relatively speaking, steak has gotten really expensive in Buenos Aires. The steaks at Mirasol are no where near Ruth's Chris Steak House.

That's about what I pay in San Diego for a great 16 oz Rib Eye at one of my favorite steak places Ruth's Chris in Del Mar, California near my house.

I love Ruths Chris steaks! Delicious. The prices are comparable now at nice steak houses. I joke with my wife all the time the steaks at good quality steakhouses in the US taste better than Argentina. The quality of beef has gone down in Argentina over the years. And now probably the finest selection will get exported vs. stay here.

I agree the steaks are head and shoulders better in the USA. At least at good steakhouses. I just find the steaks here meh. Nothing too special or at least the reputation of the best steaks in the world largely are exaggerated.

It makes my blood boil that the steaks are same price as fancy restaurant in USA now. This is wrong.

I assume they were some of the best in the world in the 90s ( I have no idea I wasn't here ). Then Argentina just got tagged with this "great steak" reputation ever since even though it hasn't been true for a long time

Yes in the 1990's before the corralito the quality was very high. Mostly grass fed. The problem now is most of it is grain fed and the quality has gone downhill. The steaks of today are no where near the quality from before. Some still do have excellent steaks that are grass fed but it's more expensive.

But the typical steak in America is better than the typical steak in Argentina now at nicer places.
