Is rice better in Brazil ?

I've never been to Brazil but I always hear how much better the fresh produce is there, actual fresh and top quality vegetables

What about rice ? I love Argentina but I find the quality of rice deplorable. It's such a huge part of my culture it actually makes me depressed how bad it is. The supermarket rice here is inedible ( my opinion, I'm not claiming to be god ). Those specialist stores are hardly better .,. Just because a big clear plastic container says "Jasmina rice" or basmati I don't believe it for a second. The quality is awful and I think they just got some regular trash from a supermarket, poured it into a clear container, labelled and put the price up 5x

Brazil has MUCH fresher and better produce (fruits and vegetables) vs. Argentina. I don't know why they are so bad overall here. Rice is excellent in Brazil. You will find a much better food quality in Brazil vs. Argentina. I also think the steaks there are also delicious.

I didn't notice many places with rice dishes in Argentina compared to many other Latin American countries. Brazil has feijão which is delicious and the rice is amazing. Fruits in Rio when I went were very fresh. Buenos Aires has neighborhood verdulerias around each neighborhood and quality was ok but in the store fruits and vegetables were very sad compared to the typical grocery store in the US.

I'm not claiming to be a rice expert but perhaps I am because I eat it every day 🤣 Having said that, at the risk of sounding snobbish, jasmine rice is the best there is. It is not easy to find jasmine rice in CABA. Barrio chino has it. Sometimes normal dieteticas also have it. The price, however, is excruciatingly high. See photos below.

Sometimes you see 'jazmin nacional' and let me tell you. The grains look similar to Thai jasmine rice but they taste and smell nothing like it. And it isn't cheap so forget it. What I make do with here in Argentina is Doble Carolina (or Arroz Fortuna. They're quite similar. I'm not sure what the differences are. Some sources they're the same but some say otherwise. Either will do but Doble Carolina is available everywhere) which is quite affordable and it is, personally, the best kind of rice to eat on a regular basis. I don't like the texture and consistency of Largo Fino. It is a lot cheaper, though. But nah. That kind of texture is only good for making fried rice. One kg of Doble Carolina at a chino costs around 2500 pesos. If you buy it at Coto on Fri with Mercado Pago's 25% discount, the price could be as low as 1800-2000 pesos/kg. There are several brands but to me they don't matter as long as it is Doble Carolina.

Thanks for posting this. I tried buying some rice in BA but it was very bland. I will look for these brands. I saw the prices of rice there and was shocked at how expensive it was.

You sound like a rice expert to me!

40,000 pesos for 5 KG bag? That's almost $28 USD! Here I pay $35 for a 25 pound bag or 11.4 KG huge bag of Jasmine rice. Very expensive in BA.

Doble Carolina is not a brand. It is a type of rice. It comes in many brands. See examples below. To me it doesn't really matter which brand. As long as it says Doble Carolina and the grains don't look too broken.

Thanks have you tried the brand of Jasmine Rice in the picture you posted that's 11k pesos for a kilo ? How is it ? That price is a bit painful but I'll suck it up and buy it if the quality is decent. So that's in a shop in barrio chino ?

Yes. The quality is decent. I bought five of them a while back from a dietética in my neighborhood and I got a good price for them too. But sadly I'm down to my last bag 😢
