The President assured that the result of the vote in the Senate “was expected” and was confident that the Chamber of Deputies would finally approve it. He denied that he had a confrontation with Vice President Victoria Villarruel

Javier Milei analyzed the rejection of the DNU in the Senate
The rejection of the Decree of Necessity and Urgency of deregulation of the economy by the Senate had a full impact on the Government itself, despite the fact that in the hours that followed, the official voices were in charge of underlining that the result of the vote was something that It was in the plans. And President Javier Milei expressed himself today in that same sense , who also ratified that the May Pact is subject not only to the approval of the DNU, but also of the Bases Law and the fiscal package.

Although the president expressed himself in the hours after the session on his social networks, as he usually does, he gave an extensive interview on Radio La Red where he analyzed in more depth what happened yesterday, and even denied a confrontation with the vice president. Victoria Villarruel.

“It was something that was within our plans, something to be expected. The composition of the Chamber meant that there was no room for a different result. In any case, I want to highly value and praise the work of our senators and the support of the PRO senators, such as 10 of the 13 radicals. We are seven senators and we got 25 votes. Deep down we are doing a good job, but this takes time, these things have this dynamic and these are the rules of the democratic system,” Milei said.

The president insisted on the idea that the vote in the Upper House “made it clear who are truly against the Argentines,” and stressed that despite the Senate's rejection, DNU 70/2023 remains in force and is He expressed hope that the Lower House would approve it: “ We are confident that it can go ahead in the Deputies.”

Likewise, Milei was asked if the approval of the decree was a condition for the signing of the pact with the governors, convened during the opening of ordinary sessions of Congress and scheduled for May 25. “ It is not only the DNU, it also has to do with the Base Law. It is as we had agreed,” he stressed.

Within that condition for the signing of the agreement, it also included the fiscal package, which was originally part of the omnibus law that was finally withdrawn by the ruling party itself in the Lower House when the particular debate was taking place, after its general approval.

“It is a precondition for the May Pact. It has 10 points of an economic nature, and the Base Law is linked to a reform on economic issues. It is difficult for one to go on to determine the bases of 10 policies for a prosperous Argentina if we do not agree on the fiscal issue. I'm going to emphasize it: there are things that are not negotiable here in any way. One is the zero deficit, Argentina's fiscal deficit is over, it is an immovable policy. I am tied to the mainmast like Ulysses and my flanks shoot at the sirens who want to make us crash against the stones. The other thing is the sanitation of the Central Bank,” he stressed.

Milei insisted that last night's result in the Senate “leaves some doubts” regarding the May Pact and recalled what he had said in his speech before the Legislative Assembly: “When I presented the speech in the Legislative Assembly, basically what I said It is that if they want confrontation, there will be confrontation, and if they want an agreement, we will have an agreement. Yesterday they did not show they were going down the path of agreement, they decided to go down the path of obstruction, to keep their privileges against the Argentines. But it was within the expected results. What I value is how we have increased the number of adhesions.”

His relationship with Villarruel and the response to Lousteau

In the almost hour-long interview, the president was also asked if there was a confrontation with the vice president, something he flatly denied and linked it to " media very interested in breaking and attacking the Government." In that sense, he explained that the statement issued by the Office of the President on Wednesday night, once the session to discuss the DNU was confirmed, had “a malicious interpretation” since “the cannon shot was at the caste, not at Victory".

Milei also highlighted the video that Villarruel recorded after the session , in which he ratified his total commitment to the Government. “ We always knew that this task was not going to be easy, but we have not been doing this for two days, we have been fighting this fight for years,” she said.

“There is an absolutely unbalanced situation in the Senate. There is a lot of what passes for the Nirvana fallacy, they compare how things should be in paradise. Of course, if you compare it with paradise, everything is crap. But the restrictions we have are not taken into account. In that sense, we are calm because we know how these types of things work and we try to do the best job possible,” he insisted.

The President also referred to the vote against Martín Lousteau and the harsh criticism that the head of the UCR made towards his figure.

“The things that happen inside the UCR are problems for the UCR. If he believes that there was pressure, he should report it. The thing is that it must be very hard for him to be president of a party, go to a vote and be the only one who votes along those lines. It is easier to blame someone else than to recognize the mistake he is making,” he noted.

Likewise, he said that "it is false that the DNU is unconstitutional" because " it does not get involved in issues of the Penal Code, tax or electoral issues" and that " basically what it proposes is to return freedoms to Argentines."
