Expat Life: Local Discoveries, Global Connections

What are the dream companies to work for in Argentina?

My Argentine roommate works at Mercado Libre and honestly, it feels like she lives in a different country. They pay him in USD, he works remotely, has top-tier health insurance, gym memberships, extra vacation… it’s like a little Silicon Valley bubble inside Argentina.
I even saw TikToks like “Come with me to work at Mercado Libre”, and they look like a mix between Google and a trendy café. I totally get why everyone wants in.

A friend’s cousin just started working at Globant. He’s in tech, and apparently it completely changed his life. He can actually save money, travel, and has better benefits than most people I know here. I was told that in job interviews, they even ask: Are you aiming for one of the big ones?
It’s not just about the salary, it’s the idea of having stability and feeling like you’re part of a different system that actually works.

It’s not just tech roles, I know someone who works in the accounting and admin department at Globant, and she’s genuinely happy there. She said the environment is super organized, the pay is solid, and the benefits are way above average for Argentina.
She did mention it wasn’t easy to get in , she had to go through something like three rounds of interviews, even though it’s not a tech position. It kind of reminds me of how people in the U.S. dream about working at places like Google or Netflix, obviously with big cultural differences, but that same idea of “if I land this job, I’m set.”
Here, it’s one of the few places where you can build a stable, modern career without leaving the country.

Another very aspirational company here is Techint. They have offices all over the world, and getting a job there is like winning the lottery. But honestly, a lot of people say you need really good connections to get in. They constantly reward employees with things that sound almost unreal. The most anticipated one, the one everyone hopes for all year, is the Christmas bonus. That’s the big moment.
Right now, people must be thrilled because it’s aguinaldo season. Here in Argentina, employers are legally required to pay an extra month’s salary halfway through the year and again at the end. It’s something people really count on.
I don’t think there’s anything like that in the U.S., right? As far as I know, companies can give holiday bonuses there, but it’s not required by law like it is here.

In the U.S. we don’t have anything like the “aguinaldo”, those mandatory extra payments twice a year. Bonuses depend on the company and they’re not required by law. That’s a major difference! Good for employees in Argentina, now I get why everyone was so excited about the famous aguinaldo. LOL.

The #1 dream company here? Definitely Mercado Libre. People are obsessed with working there, it’s like the holy grail of jobs in Argentina. 😅”
They offer a hybrid work model: part remote, and then once or twice a week (or whenever necessary) you go into the office. And trust me, you want to go into that office it’s insane. Their HQ is in The Polo Dot Baires, and it looks like something out of Silicon Valley.

The employees always seem genuinely happy, and the company culture is super modern and people-focused. Flexible hours, cool perks, smart people, good pay, it sets a whole new standard. Honestly, more companies here should follow their model. There’s no doubt it’s the best company here.

We are partial but we would say the BEST company in Buenos Aires to work for is @BuySellBA. Our CEO is American and very kind and overly generous. He pays us higher salaries. He pays 100% of our OSDE private healthcare insurance premiums. He gives us general bonuses that can sometimes exceed our monthly salary. He gives us time off from work in additional to the ridiculous amount of national holidays.

For now, we also get to each work at home so we don't have to commute up to 3 hours going back and forth from some places were the employees live. He bought us desks, work stations, computers, monitors and he teaches us and mentors us each day. He has a 23 year track record of success in Argentina and many of his companies have been acquired including our first company which was the largest property management company in Argentina when Luxury Retreats acquired it and then Airbnb acquired it for almost $300 Million USD in 2017.

Now we are getting ready to build Buenos Aires's most luxurious apartment hotel called Limitless and it will be like nothing
Buenos Aires has ever seen. And we will need plenty of employees for that. @BuySellBA is the best place to work in Buenos Aires.

Wow do you know if they hire Americans or people that don't have a DNI? I don't speak Spanish but I am willing to do any tasks large or small. I can get paid under the table with cash. I sent you guys a DM. I''m looking for a job! Sounds perfect for me.

I remember 2 years ago I had lunch with 2 of the @BuySellBA team. They were so nice! I asked them about their experiences with Mike as a boss and both of them had been working with him off and on for almost 20 years! Many years before he sold his company and then he sold it. They said the Canadian company that bought his, Luxury Retreats was a sh*tshow. They said they ran the company into the ground. I asked for examples and it was shocking. No process in place.

It was crazy as I asked how they got rehired and both said Mike reached out via WhatsApp and the first thing he said was I will give you 150% of your salary now to move over to BuySellBA. Plus I will pay 100% of your healthcare just like I did before. I can't believe that. Maybe this is an Argentina thing? I can't imagine doing that in the USA. They both quickly jumped back on board. Carina is great. My wife and I deal with her all the time as she sends us a new reservation email and updates our Google sheets spreadsheet.

When I bought both of my places his team signed the boleto and closing documents for me. I can't rave enough about @BuySellBA. Great people.

Thanks @Johnny! I love you brother. Thanks for the kind words. Yes, Luxury Retreats was a disaster. I'm writing a book and will post about some of the stories how they tried stealing from me after they acquired my company. I purposely never said anything because I didn't want to screw up a potential deal with Airbnb buying them but I'm sure all the earn out pay packages are over for the executives and I will post about it soon. I literally caught them red handing trying to steal like $500 USD from me. They said that they changed the lock on my door for an "emergency". They didn't know my mother in law lived in Buenos Aires and I had here go to the apartment and try it and it still worked. I busted them in a total lie.

I'm very proud that in the past my company was one of the largest employers in Buenos Aires. Between employees, contractors and architectural teams renovating and furnishing properties, we were employing several hundreds of employees in Buenos Aires and paying them ALL much more than the local companies were paying. And all in white.

I would be surprised if they hired anyone that did not have a DNI. Definitely not if they don't speak Spanish too. This is a difficult spot for expats. I know many that struggle to get a job here. @BuySellBA is very kind. I sent them a referral via DM and they found a job for my friend. It was not in their company but it was for a real estate office. She is very happy there and Mike personally made the connection to the owner of the brokerage.

They also helped one of my friends find work. Former Spanish tutor with perfect English they found a job for her in an accounting firm. I was very grateful. I read this post last night on X and was disturbed.

Mike truly is a national treasure and he too was able to help a local friend of mine there as well. The legend grows larger with each passing day and story, and hopefully they make a statue of you there one day. 🙂

Few things are more heartbreaking than young, intelligent women having to escort themselves. Big difference between models and so-called influencers being flown around and your next door neighbor type doing it just to live.

I can't imagine the vast majority of Spanish tutors here making much especially virtual online ones. From my understanding the platforms either pay them very little or take a good percentage for hosting. It's been about 2 years but one that I know of was paying their tutors around $2 an hour (don't know if or how much that's changed since). Some of them I've continued with off platform and pay them directly much more.

Mike sounds too good to be true! I saw on their website he has been in Buenos Aires for a long time! I thought he was young! I just saw that I was only 5 years old when he moved to BA! OMG. I saw him on a YouTube and he looks so young. Are there two Mikes? I'm so confused. Mike sounds like a saint!

That is terrible about girls having to do that. Here in Spain there are a lot of Argentine girls and I think they are doing the same thing. In the nightclubs when you go to Madrid or Spain or even here in Malaga I have seen Argentine girls escorting. I am friends with a girl and her friend is from Buenos Aires and she comes 3 months at a time and "works".

I don't judge anyone. I am hooking up a few times a month and I'm not getting paid! I am usually the ones that have to pay for my own coffee with these losers! So maybe the Argentines are the smart ones!

That is crazy that the company tried stealing from you. The company that bought your company? Wow that is amazing? Why didn't you go public with this? What did you do? Did you continue having them manage your properties? I don't think I could trust someone after that. Unfortunately this is why I would never buy in Buenos Aires because there is so much fraud there. I think unless I had a family or friend or someone dependable then I wouldn't want to do it as I would assume I was getting stolen from.

Unfortunately a lot of Argentine girls are coming to Spain to "work" for the summer. I'm told things are very difficult there. One of the reasons we left last year. Even though inflation was slowing down, the cost on everything was going up. My healthcare premium kept going up and I'm told it is continuing to go up in Buenos Aires. In Spain it is very cheap and the food is very affordable too.

I am meeting @earlyretirement in a few weeks here in Spain. I can't wait!

It's a jungle here. This is the reason why I told my sister she HAD to get someone that has a good reputation over decades to manage her property. I have heard too many horror stories from local friends. Most of my building is getting out of Airbnbs and I am very thankful that we don't have the in and out traffic. I had 3 Airbnbs in my building and they have all converted into long term rentals and now they are people with a 2 year lease. Very nice people.

I am going to Spain in November and meeting my sister there. It will be nice to be able to afford to go to a nice restaurant.

Argentinian tech workers have a strong reputation abroad and Mercado Libre is a cause of that. Some like working for them and others don't, like any company. My partner has worked in tech and now works abroad for Mexico. But she would get recruited by ML all the time. Telecom is very popular for tech workers. The Agriculture space is modernizing with Fintech companies popping up in that space. It is rapidly growing. There is one called Nera, that my partner just left but they had joint billion dollar investments from Galicia and Santander were collaborating. She liked it too. However, the Argentines are getting expensive to employ abroad.

How much does Mercado Libre pay for the positions? Do you know @Good Stuff ? Thanks for this datapoint. I don't know anyone that works at Mercado Libre and I was always curious if they pay good salaries?

Thanks for the kind words @FuturoBA! I always try to help someone when people reach out to me. I get so many so I can't help them all but I've been able to successfully help many, many people's friend on this forum. We don't hire people that don't have a DNI and not fully bi-lingual. Most of the jobs that we hire for and also refer to friend's companies they need to have a DNI and be bi-lingual. Hey, I hope they make a statue of me someday in Buenos Aires. That would be awesome. LOL. I can say, I have done a lot for this country and especially in Buenos Aires. I love this country so much and love, love, love Buenos Aires.

I totally agree about it being sad about the # of girls having to go into escorting. I personally know 4 friends that recently confided they have to go into that. If you go on websites like ArgentinaXP(dot) com you will see an explosion in girls. That is the leading indicator to me how bad things get. It's exploding upwards. It's sad as my friends are educated, smart, intelligent and some are mothers and I feel terrible. I always try to find these girls normal jobs. But even in normal jobs the salaries are very low and Argentina is expensive now.

I hope we can help your friend @FuturoBA with a part-time job. We don't need anyone full time but my assistant met with her on Friday to interview her to see if she wanted some hours part-time. We will also see if any of my friends need her. But we are flooded each day with 5-10 CV's a day.
