All transportation will be paralyzed next Thursday (AP)

Next Thursday, May 9, the entire union arc of the country will adhere to the national strike promoted by the CGT and the two CTA, in rejection of the Bases Law and the labor reform promoted by the government of Javier Milei . Unlike the partial strike defined last January, when the then-called “Omnibus Law” was discussed for the first time and compliance was partial in order to mobilize Congress, it is expected that this time the measure will have a greater impact and the adhesion of all economic activities.

The plenary session of the transport unions decided to support the union decision, which will affect attendance at workplaces. Yesterday it was learned that the drivers of the Unión Tranviarios Automotor (UTA) , the union led by Roberto Fernández, ratified their commitment to join the strike, so the buses will not operate all day, from midnight on Thursday until the midnight .

"We ask the authorities who have in their hands the decisions that are affecting the lives of the vast majority of the People, to reflect and understand the scope of the mandate that was granted to the Executive and Legislative powers, and that based on this and the compliance with the National Constitution, act accordingly, in defense of the interests and well-being of all Argentinians," the UTA noted in the statement.

There will also be no provision of tasks at airports , truck logistics services and train services , after the ratification of the measure by the main unions (Unión Ferroviaria, La Fraternidad, signalmen). The subway will not work in the City of Buenos Aires, according to the Union Association of Subway and Premetro Workers (AGTSyP), which questioned the “Bases Law and the government's DNU because they do not represent any benefit for the majority, for those less they have, nor for the workers who would pay profits again when 120 thousand millionaires would stop paying for personal assets.”

The entire air, sea, land, port and railway transport activities will not work as the Confederation of Transport Workers (CATT) and the two main unions of the UGATT , represented in the UTA and La Fraternidad, join the protest.

Banks will be closed

The Banking Association confirmed that it will comply with the general strike called by the CGT and announced that for this reason there will be no attention in any financial institution in the country. “Because the economic policy carried out by the National Government does not stop harming workers and the people as a whole, while shamelessly favoring large businessmen, economic groups and royal power, the Banking Association adheres to the measure of force available by the General Confederation of Labor,” they said from the union led by Sergio Palazzo .

Among the arguments indicated, the union pointed out against the “ regressive labor reform that takes away workers' rights; the reinstatement of the income tax ; a pension reform that punishes our retirees; the advance of privatizations or disappearances of public organizations; a Base Law and a DNU that does not have a single measure in favor of workers; the fall in the purchasing power of wages; the waves of layoffs and growing unemployment; the unprecedented wild adjustment ; a national industry that tends to disappear; and contempt for culture, health and public education . ”

The Commerce union adheres to the strike

It is expected that large supermarket chains and shopping centers will also not work during the day on Thursday. The head of the Argentine Federation of Commerce and Services Employees (FAECyS), Armando Cavalieri , released a statement in which the entire union will adhere to the measure.

“Aligned with the claims and demands of the Labor Movement, commercial workers have decided to stop in defense of sources of work, of the national industry and in defense of the Argentine pension system. In that sense, I would like to highlight that the sister branches have decided to stop to protect the important role that FAECYS occupies in the life and future of our beloved FAECYS," said one of the union leaders who has a fluid dialogue with the Government.

Health, education and industry without activities

The unions that bring together Health, such as the Health union headed by Héctor Daer in private hospitals , and organizations that work in public health will also be on strike on Thursday. Only the emergency service is maintained in these cases, as is usual in union force measures.

In the educational sector, CTERA ratified its adherence to the measure in all public schools in the country. Similarly, the state ATE and UPCN also joined the union action.

Other industry unions that were organic with the general strike are the FTIA (Food), UOM (Metallurgical), SMATA (Mechanical), Luz y Fuerza and UTHGRA (Hotels and gastronomic) unions.

Street, avenue and route closures

Along with the CGT, the two sides of the CTA and the UTEP, the union that brings together social organizations and workers of the so-called popular economy, joined the general strike.

This was announced by the territorial movements grouped in the Union of Workers of the Popular Economy (UTEP), and in the Piquetero Fighting Front, which under the slogan " In Defense of the Work of the Popular Economy ", based on the 10 a.m. on Tuesday, they will proceed to cut roads in 500 points in the country.

The organizations warned in a statement that in response to "the decision of the Ministry of Human Capital, there are already several appeals for protection presented to the courts to intervene in the face of the serious humanitarian crisis that is being experienced in the popular neighborhoods and mainly in the community kitchens that are "they find themselves short of supplies."

In another section, they indicated that the “road closures with popular soup kitchens on all routes in the country” aim to “prevent the salaries of the workers of the popular economy from being taken away”, which according to them “was achieved with the sanction of the social emergency law in 2016″.

The organizations that make up the UTEP (Movimiento Evita, Corriente Clasista y Combativa and Somos Barrios de Pie), such as those that belong to the Piquetero Fighting Front (Polo Obrero, the MTR Votamos Luchar, Libres del Sur, the Argentina Rebelde MAR Movement and the Popular Front Darío Santillán, among others), announced the schedule of cuts.
