The president of Argentina, Javier Milei (2i), and the commander of the United States Southern Command, Laura Richardson, pose with the United States ambassador to Argentina, Marc Stanley (l), and the Argentine Minister of Defense, Luis Petri . EFE/Presidency of Argentina.

The United States government announced this Thursday that it will send Argentina a non-refundable fund of 40 million dollars, with the aim of strengthening the country's national security . The subsidy was officially communicated by the United States embassy in Argentina, which highlighted that a measure of these characteristics is assigned to “important partners” and stressed that it is the first sending of a sum of money in this concept since 2003.

“The FMF (Foreign Military Financing) is a security assistance grant reserved for important partners. It allows Argentina to purchase defense items, training and services from the United States, through free assistance funds , and improve interoperability with US forces. This subsidy will favor Argentina's military modernization effort, contributing to the Argentine purchase of the F-16 supersonic combat jets , explains the text from the diplomatic corps.

The announcement by the North American government is in line with the recent efforts made by the presidency of Javier Milei , through the Minister of Defense, Luis Petri , in Denmark. There, the national State acquired 24 modernized combat aircraft, which were incorporated into the Air Force. After this, the United States highlighted that the country joins a small group of nations that possesses this type of weapons.

“The purchase of the 24 F-16s from Denmark aligns Argentina with a group of 26 nations and allies that operate the platform, increasing interoperability. The F-16s will allow Argentina to more effectively defend its territory and cooperate with regional partners to maintain peace and stability in the Americas,” the US embassy said.

The United States has a long and trusted relationship with Argentina in military procurement, training and professional education. Since 1998, Argentina has been a Major Extra-NATO Ally. The Embassy and the US government are working closely with our Argentine partners to further strengthen the security of Argentina and the defense partnership between both countries under the banner of the F-16 program,” the official text adds.

The decision reported by the US government constitutes another fact in the sense of strengthening the relationship between the countries, something that has been a primary objective since the inauguration of President Javier Milei .

The head of state has stated on repeated occasions that his international policy is based on the link with Western countries, particularly in the relationship with the northern power. Milei has expressed that his alignment with the United States government “is independent of who he governs.” That phrase was uttered when asking about his preferences in the electoral race between Democrats and Republicans, which will be settled in the next elections by Donald Trump and the current president Josep Biden .

Milei's position has also been clear in relation to the conflicts that Israel , an ally of the United States, has with neighboring countries in the Middle East. In each case, the Argentine president has been categorical in stating what position his management assumes. The aid communicated this Thursday by the United States falls within this framework.

On the other hand, it was learned that the possibility of a new acquisition of equipment by the Argentine government is in force, in this case from the United States. This would involve the purchase of Basler BT-67 aircraft for $143 million ; spare engines; spare parts and spare parts, consumables, accessories and repair and return services; major modifications and maintenance support; aircraft equipment and support and ground assistance; unclassified publications and technical documentation; Participation fees in the Technical Coordination Program; studies and surveys; ferry and transportation support; training of personnel and training equipment; U.S. government and contractor engineering, technical and logistical support services; and other related elements of logistics and program support.

However, the Ministry of Defense announced that for the moment, the national government does not plan to advance such an operation, although it was an effort carried out to evaluate the possibility, which is not ruled out in the future.
