The Government confirmed that the President will stop using commercial flights to travel

The national government confirmed today that President Javier Milei will stop using commercial flights in his travels, as he had done since the beginning of his administration. According to presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni, the decision was made after a suggestion from the Ministry of Security led by Patricia Bullrich.

“The Ministry of Security warned us about certain risks that exist for the president to continue flying on common commercial flights . The President can no longer travel on commercial flights and the Ministry of Security has sent all parties a confidential report on the reason for this suggestion. Indeed, the President will stop using commercial flights to travel,” Adorni stated when asked by Infobae.

In this way, the spokesperson announced that from now on, the Government will take greater precautions in the trips that Javier Milei makes, although he avoided giving details about how the president will travel from now on.

Beyond what Adorni said, in the Casa Rosada they admit that it was a mistake to stop using the official fleet for the President's trips, and they recalled that he had to suspend his trip to Denmark due to the risks involved in taking a commercial flight in amid the escalation of tension due to Iran's attack on Israel.

In addition, they confirmed that the former head of the Military House Alejandro Guglielmi had warned about the risks of the president traveling on scheduled flights. Guglielmi was removed from his position in March by decision of the Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei.

As a sign of austerity, Milei had announced, before taking office as President, that he would not use the official fleet and that he would travel on commercial flights. She did so every time she traveled abroad in these months.

Last night, Minister Patricia Bullrich had given a preview of the issue by warning that, despite budget restrictions in the midst of the generalized economic adjustment, the President had to be “taken care of” and that he should not continue traveling on commercial flights.

There is no money, but we have to take care of the President . It is a topic that we have not discussed yet, but it does not seem to me that it is not a topic to put on the table. We must consider that Argentina is in a stage of austerity, but we also have to take care of the President ,” said the national official in dialogue with journalist Eduardo Feinmann on LN+ .

Even though it is not used by the President, the official fleet continues to generate a high cost for the maintenance of the planes and helicopters that comprise it, and the salaries of the people who are part of the unit.

According to experts consulted by Infobae , the State should allocate more than USD 10 million per year to maintain the fleet in current conditions . Added to this are the salaries of about 140 employees, including crew members, mechanics, lawyers, pilots, and administrative employees. It is more than 140 million pesos per month.

The most expensive aircraft to maintain is the ARG 01 , acquired during Alberto Fernández's administration. Although it arrived less than a year ago, it should soon undergo a major inspection, which would require an investment of more than 3 million dollars . The outgoing government launched a tender to carry out these works within hours of the change of command and with the majority of officials resigning .

The plane has been stopped since the end of December, when it went to the United States for a technical inspection . It only moved on Friday, February 2 to go and return to the province of Mendoza . Just for fuel, that trip costs about 20 thousand dollars. María Belen Agudiez, the undersecretary of General Planning, would have traveled on the flight. “It was not a necessary flight for mechanical reasons, nor to comply with the pilots' flight hours,” confirmed an aeronautical source.

To buy the ARG 01, the Government had to invest USD 21,730,000 and deliver the old Tango 01, which was valued at about USD 3 million. Last year, the plane was used several times by the former president, Alberto Fernández, and by the former Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa. On the other hand, the former vice president, Cristina Kirchner, never got on and used two YPF aircraft to transport her: a Learjet 60, registration LV-BTA, and an Embraer Praetor 550, registered with the registration LV-KGJ.

The current Government announced that these two planes will be sold, although the process takes a long time. With time, between 15 and 19 million dollars could be raised.

In the midst of the campaign, Milei had supported the purchase of a new presidential plane for “security issues.” “(Alberto) He doesn't take it home…. Whoever is the next president is going to use it ,” she said in an interview with TN. However, when she arrived at the Casa Rosada, she changed her mind.
