“We don't like setting minimum prices, it is an issue that workers must address with their employers,” said Javier Milei. The presidential spokesperson assured that they will also try to mediate in the negotiation with the teachers

President Javier Milei ruled out the possibility of setting a new minimum, vital and mobile wage by decree after the frustrated negotiations held yesterday in the Ministry of Labor. He also rejected a call for a national teachers' union .

“We don't like setting minimum prices. That is an issue that has to be addressed by workers with their employers. "I don't believe that a politician can determine a decree by hand," said Milei in dialogue with Jonathan Viale on Rivadavia radio.

“Am I going to issue a decree setting a price? Here, Professor Espert just made me the symbol that the Roman emperors used when they ordered the gladiator to be killed,” he added.

The “professor” Espert is the national deputy José Luis Espert, who at the time of the interview was in the presidential residence of Olivos.

Almost simultaneously, the presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni , assured that they called the teachers for next week but not for a joint negotiation. “The national teaching partnership as it is does not exist, what is going to happen is that the parties will come together to try to unblock the conflict and the administrative part will begin to hold that meeting,” reported the official in his usual contact with journalists in Casa Pink.

Adorni reiterated that they will not transfer money to the teacher incentive fund because they consider that there is no law that forces the National State to do so.

The discussion over the minimum wage

Unions and companies did not agree this Thursday on an increase in the minimum, vital and mobile wage that would establish a new labor remuneration floor. Initially, it was believed that the Ministry of Labor would determine it by decree in the absence of agreement, but the President rejected this possibility.

The new amount is decisive because it has a fiscal impact, since it modifies the value of some key social programs such as Potenciar Trabajo or Becas Progresar. It also has an impact on the Income Tax floor.

The plenary meeting of the National Council of Employment, Productivity and the Minimum Living and Mobile Wage, which was held virtually, was attended by authorities from the labor portfolio led by Omar Yasín , representatives of chambers such as the Argentine Industrial Union, the Argentine Confederation of Medium Enterprises (CAME) and union leaders who belong to the CGT, and the two CTA. Around 7:30 p.m. official sources confirmed to Infobae that there was no agreement. The CGT, for example, demanded an increase from $156,000 to $288,600 .

“Breaking a long tradition of tripartite social dialogue and collective agreements within the scope of the Wage Council in our country, the government prevented the normal development of the meeting with the sole objective of boycotting any possibility of agreement,” the CGT said in a statement. .

“The Government prevented the meeting from taking place normally by all possible means , the businessmen led by the Argentine Industrial Union were complacent with that strategy and did not formulate any proposal . The same businessmen who in the ILO defend social dialogue and collective consensus as a fundamental tool for the economic and social development of the country, today erased with their actions what they proclaim with words in international forums," they questioned from the labor union. “The social irresponsibility revealed today by the Ministry of Labor only confirms the absolute indifference of the Government in the face of the social drama that Argentines are going through,” they concluded.

Teaching parity yes or no?

Less than two weeks before classes begin in some jurisdictions of the country, sources from the Ministry of Education of the Nation revealed that they will convene next week the five national teaching unions (CTERA, UDA, AMET, SADOP and CEA) to negotiate the minimum teacher salary. That meeting, which was originally scheduled for last week, could unblock a beginning of the school year that until now is shaping up to be conflictive.

The national government wants to prevent this meeting from being called a “national teacher partnership” because, in its opinion, this instance of dialogue does not exist as such.

The unions had warned of a conflictive beginning of classes if salary negotiations were not opened and even interpreted that the Executive Branch was seeking conflict. In fact, some jurisdictions began to anticipate a possible scenario of teacher strikes, such as the province of Córdoba , which announced the implementation of a bonus for presenteeism (which they called the “teaching professionalism item” ). The measure is similar to the “classroom item” that reduced participation in strikes in the province of Mendoza, where it has been implemented for almost 8 years.

The last national teacher joint meeting, held in September of last year, had set the minimum teacher salary at 250 thousand pesos in December . That figure marks a floor for what a common grade teacher, single-time and without seniority, should earn throughout the country. With an accumulated inflation of 51.4% between December and January, these salaries were very out of date, the unions denounce.
