The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) will ask for an 85% increase when it meets within the framework of the Minimum Wage Council convened by the Government, scheduled for Thursday, February 15. Business owners and worker representatives must discuss that day what the increase in salaries will be, whose floor is currently $156,000 and whose last update occurred in December. With the Cegetista proposal it would be $288,600.

The intentions of the labor union were reflected in a statement published on the networks. “The call to the Minimum Living and Mobile Wage Council is an area of dialogue with the aim of recovering some of the purchasing power of the most impoverished sectors,” they expressed in the text. “The devaluation, which is added to the brutal inflation accumulated December 2023/Feb 2024 (especially in basic food and health basket supplies) imposes an update of at least 85%,” they described in their last paragraph.

It will be the first update that salaries will have through this mechanism during the administration of Javier Milei . The call for the salary discussion, which had been postponed on two occasions, will be a reference for the informal sectors of the economy and will impact social programs such as Empower Work , the initial teacher salary, the basic retirement for those who have 30 years of contributions and the inclusion or not of workers who earn less than 15 minimum wages for the payment of Profits.

The union representatives, this time, anticipated what they will ask for in the midst of a strong confrontation with the economic course that Milei adopted and that included a march against the mega DNU 70 on December 27, when they convened in front of the Palace of Courts, and the strike on January 24, just 44 days after the libertarian leader took office as president, with a massive march to the National Congress. Now, with inflation that was 25.5% in December and that projections for January place above 20%, they see the opportunity to recover, at least in part, salaries.

The CGT managed to have the labor chapter included in the decree annulled for the moment through a precautionary measure, but it views the Government with distrust because they assure that it has a profound labor reform in its plans to send to Parliament soon. Although at first there was an approach by leaders such as Luis Barrionuevo or Gerardo Martínez to the libertarian officials, when there was talk of modifying the dismissal and compensation regime, over time that relationship was eroded until it was almost completely broken.

In the Minimum Wage Commission, unionists coexist, through the CGT and the CTA, and business chambers such as the UIA. It acts as a kind of national joint body that can determine what percentage increases the unions and their employers would be willing to agree to for different activities.

The CTA has already declared itself in a state of alert and mobilization and asked the Institute of Studies and Training (IEF) to present a report on the inflation accumulated in recent months (in 2023 it exceeded 238%).

The beneficiaries of the Potenciar Trabajo Plan, who must have work compensation of at least 4 hours a day, receive half of a Minimum Wage, so they currently receive $78,000. The increase will also have an impact on Profits, since those who earn less than 15 minimum wages ($2,340,000) are excluded from paying it. According to INDEC, according to what was published on January 16 of this year, the value of 1 (one) Total Basic Basket type 2 for a family of 4 members is $495,798.32 .

Argentina is one screwed up country with their economy. Crazy to hear about 30% minimum wage increases over the next 2 months and crazier to see how low minimum wages are currently at.
