The map of defeat

Even though the polls had him as the favorite, Milei faced an unexpected defeat in Buenos Aires. The Peronist party scored a solid 13% victory, showing that voter preference wasn’t what many anticipated. This surprising margin raises a lot of questions: can Milei turn things around ahead of October? The results prove that even if the campaign looked favorable, the actual vote told a very different story.

Honestly, I still support Milei. This was just a wake-up call, he needs to adjust his strategy and messaging. The policies could still make a difference if he connects better with everyday people.

On the other hand, this is how Kicillof thanks the people of Buenos Aires: He will start applying Gross Income tax withholdings on digital wallets. This affects mainly users and businesses:

  • Consumers: A small percentage will be withheld on certain transactions made with digital wallets.
  • Businesses and freelancers: A portion of the money they receive through these platforms will be withheld, impacting their cash flow.

In short, anyone using digital wallets for payments or receiving money through them will feel the effect.

Maybe this is what happens when you ignore the everyday struggles of people. Winning policies on paper don’t mean much if they don’t feel it in their wallets and bills.

I'm sure that's a big part of it but he keeps getting caught in these bush league scandals and his messaging does stink. It's a bit sad watching this guy who held the world's attention at one point, just pissing away his credibility with petty scams.

My partner commented that the kiciloff victory speech was signaling a return to Peronism replacing Kirchnerism. She said this because The Campora flags were relegated to the back of the of the crowd while Argentinian flags were flown up front. The National Anthem was played and sung out load instead of a cumbia, normally played by Kirchnerism. Whether the messaging stays, one will see. As someone who votes against the left and will continue to, she said it was good political messaging and she preferred it to the cumbia, while reiterated the failures of Kiciloff. Fuerza Patria went more nationalist in the acceptance, but it didn't win as much so as Milei lost.

It looks to me like Kicillof wanted to distance himself from Cristina, which makes me think there will now be an internal power struggle within Peronismo, Cristina, Máximo, Massa, and Kicillof all competing for space. It’s clear that Milei is applying solid macroeconomic policies, but he has no political tact and forgets about people’s daily struggles, and that’s why he lost.
