In its attack against state companies, the National Government made official the intervention of the public media for a period of one year and appointed the officials who will be in charge.

The measure had already been announced, but was confirmed this Monday with the publication in the Official Gazette of Decree 117/2024 . In effect, the intervention of Télam, Radio and Television Argentina, Public Contents and the Educ.ar platform was ordered.

Lawyer Diego Martín Chaher was appointed as controller of Radio and Television Argentina, and “on an ad-honorem basis” of Télam, Public Contents and Educ.ar. Meanwhile, Diego Sebastián Marias was appointed deputy auditor.

Both will have several powers such as: developing a reformulation, readjustment and action plan for the companies, which must be submitted to the consideration of the National Executive Branch; evaluate, modify the Agency's Staff Regulations and/or approve a new one; evaluate, modify the fund administration regime, expanding or reducing budget items and/or approve a new one; modify the Contracting Regulations for works, goods and services of the organization and/or approve a new one; and modify the organic and functional structure, the corresponding organizational charts and the Professional Regimes of contracted, permanent staff and cabinet personnel and/or approve a new one; present accountability; operate and maintain the companies, in order to optimize administrative management with a view to making said companies sustainable; appoint and remove officials and staff of each of the companies.

“If any anomaly is detected, the Comptroller and the Deputy Comptroller must accurately report its economic significance and the impact it causes or has caused on management, providing all of the respective information or work documents and advising on the actions and measures that should be adopted,” states the decree published this morning.

The intervention will be for a period of one year, but may be extended only once by the Chief of Staff.

In the recitals of the official text that bears the signatures of President Javier Milei and the Minister of the Interior, Guillermo Francos , the government justified the decision based on the Decree of Necessity and Urgency No. 70 - published on December 20 - in which A public emergency was declared in economic, financial, fiscal, administrative, pension, tariff, health and social matters until December 31, 2025.

“That the aforementioned norm took into consideration that, for the purposes of greater efficiency in the functioning of the public sector, it is necessary to carry out a profound reorganization of public companies. In this sense, by said law, Law No. 20,705 was repealed and the transformation of Companies or Companies with State participation into Public Limited Companies was established, in accordance with the regime of the General Companies Law,” it was stated in the recitals.

And he continued: "By virtue of this, in order to carry out said transformation, it is necessary to arrange for the intervention of the aforementioned companies in order to define their conduct and contribute to optimizing the effectiveness and efficiency of the actions they carry out."

The decision occurs within the framework of the process promoted by the ruling party to reorganize public companies

At the beginning of the month, the news broke that Radio Nacional did not renew more than 500 contracts corresponding to more than 40 stations throughout the country, so well-known figures were left out of the programming.

“Given the budgetary adversity we have at the moment and what is happening politically, we have not renewed artistic contracts. We have a budget for the year 2022 that was executed in 2023, redirected for 2024. We are hyper-complicated in the budgetary part to guarantee the payment of salaries,” clarified one of the provisional owners, Javier Monte , in dialogue with Télam weeks ago about the reasons for the termination of 500 contracts at Radio Nacional. In turn, he assured that another 86 were renewed at the request of management.

From the board of directors, they already assured that this decision would not be related to a reduction in public media and attribute the changes to the lack of budget and changes in programming. Even Cristián Larsen , provisional director for the second minority, had already announced in December 2023 in an interview with Baby Etchecopar: “Since January 1, we have been thinking about another format of public media because clearly the public media we have today are not useful for "The purpose for which they were created is to transmit cultural content and information services."
