After the public hearings, the new rates for AMBA urban transportation will begin to take effect.

Starting this Tuesday, traveling by public transport in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) will be more expensive. The minimum bus and train tickets will be $270 and $130, respectively.

With the aim of reducing spending on subsidies , the Ministry of Transportation published the new tariff tables. After ending the public hearing prior to the increases in AMBA urban transportation, where more than 10 million passengers travel per business day, Resolution 5/2024 confirming the measure was published this morning in the Official Gazette .
In this way, the minimum bus ticket will go to $270 and the train ticket will remain at $130 for people who have their SUBE registered in their name. Those who have not registered will pay $430 and $420.

The Government clarified that discounts will be maintained for beneficiaries of the social rate registered in the SUBE network. It is worth adding that the new negative balance of the SUBE card is $1080 pesos , equivalent to the sum of four minimum tickets ($270).

The minimum bus ticket goes from the current $76.92 to $270 and is used to travel up to three kilometers. The next fare (from three to six kilometers, the most used by AMBA passengers) will increase from $85.96 to $300.78, and the next one, from six to twelve kilometers, will reach $323.95 from $92. .29 current . The two most expensive (12 to 27 kilometers and more than 27) will have a value of 347 and 370 pesos, respectively.

The companies point out that the bus ticket should be worth, as of January, $981 if it did not have subsidies. (NA)

A novelty is that there will be a different price, almost 60% more expensive, for those who use unnominated SUBE cards, that is, who use that of a third party or who have not registered theirs in their name. For these cases, the proposed rate starts at $430 for the shortest section and reaches $589.54 for the longest . However, that penalty will only begin to apply from next April .

“It is established that, in order to pay the approved fare amounts, as well as to enjoy the benefits of the INTEGRATED TICKET SYSTEM, users of the service must nominalize their UNIQUE ELECTRONIC TICKET SYSTEM (SUBE) card, through the website https://tarjetasube.sube.gob.ar , by phone at 0800-777-7823 (option 3), by the SUBi Chatbot (1166777823), through the new SUBE App (available for Android phones) or at the Centers of SUBE Care and Management Units, before April 1, 2024″, was indicated in the resolution published this Tuesday in the Official Gazette.

In the case of the proposal of new rates for train tickets, the novelty is that they are standardized on the different lines. Until now, each line had its own rate schedule. That is eliminated. On all AMBA lines, thus, the minimum ticket will cost $130, while section two would jump to $169 and the most expensive ticket $208. Taking the Miter line as a reference, the increase is around 170% compared to current values, although it varies depending on the starting point of each branch.

In the case of trains, the use of unnominated SUBE cards will mean paying double the fare. And the fines for evading payment of the ticket will be 10 times the maximum fare, that is, $2,080 in total. The social rate will also be maintained, which pays 45% of the full price .

Last Friday, the companies in the bus sector and the Automotive Tram Union (UTA) signed a joint agreement, after Transportation guaranteed the chambers the necessary funds for the salary agreement requested by the drivers. According to the Argentine Association of Automotive Transport Entrepreneurs (AAETA) , the minimum bus ticket should cost passengers $981 based on the new cost structure in effect as of January.

The increase scheme proposed by the Government will imply an improvement compared to the situation in which 2023 had ended: according to official data, users paid only 10% of the total cost of the ticket at the end of 2023. Since February they would be around 27.5% coverage. However, so that there is no delay in real terms in tickets again, there should be an update based on the evolution of the Indec Consumer Price Index (CPI ) . From the call for the public hearing it emerges that the adjustments could be bimonthly or for a longer period.

The intention of the Treasury Palace is to reduce transport subsidies by approximately 35% in real terms during 2024. The roadmap planned with the IMF showed an adjustment equivalent to 0.2 points of GDP, with an elimination horizon within a period of three years. But for this to happen, the increases will have to be much higher than the CPI, if assistance is to be cut, in a context of strong loss of purchasing power of income .

Wow these are some huge increases percentage wise. My friends there said they just take taxis and Ubers but is there local blowback on the increases? Crazy the % difference if you don't register your card in your own name.
