For many homeowners, remodeling a bathroom is often one of those tempting home investments after living in a house or apartment for a while . And while costs can naturally vary greatly depending on the size , materials, or scope of the renovation, today it's estimated to cost upwards of US$6,000 .

According to the report published in July of this year by Reporte Inmobiliario , the cost of bathroom renovations grew by 23.16% year-over-year (July 2024 vs. July 2025), while when measured in dollars, the increase reaches 38.9%. In concrete terms, the cost of remodeling a bathroom increased by 38.9% to $7,476,236.39 (or US$6,152).

For its estimate, the report uses a bathroom measuring 3.75 m² and 2.5 m high. The breakdown is as follows:

  • Appliances, faucets, toilets, ceramics, countertops and furniture: $3,885,482.50
  • Sanitary installation with materials: $840,881.35
  • Labor for installing cladding: $1,469,278.72
  • Electrical installation with materials: $778,308.32
  • Painting: $502,285.50

Of course, these figures can easily be increased. Santiago Rodríguez Amenábar, an architect at ABVARQ , points out that, upon closer analysis, costs are no longer split 60/40 between materials and labor , as they historically were. "Now, they are split 50/50 in the total cost , so whoever does the work can be an influential factor in the budget," he clarifies.

Knowing these variables, and in order to control costs, it is therefore important to identify those tasks that are essential but constant from those where costs can be adjusted or increased depending on the square footage to be completed and the materials used. Thus, by streamlining the amount of finishing materials and reducing construction times in some cases, it is possible to reduce current estimated costs by up to 30% .

How can this reduction be achieved? Rodríguez Amenábar offers some recommendations. “Regarding the structural work and installations, we advise against fearing ground-up demolitions. While they are dirty, cumbersome, and annoying, removing all the obsolete wall coverings and pipes and reinstalling them ensures that what's hidden remains functional. If it's a small bathroom renovation, the project will be clean and renovated in a week , and ready to receive the new installations and finishes,” he says.

As for wall coverings, we now know that they vary widely in materials and prices. "For example, we find a wide variety of lower-cost, high-quality ceramic and limestone tiles , many of them handcrafted, replacing medium- and large-sized porcelain tiles, which are expensive when we add the adhesives. For high traffic, returning to granite mosaics , which currently come pre-polished, is an affordable and high-quality alternative. The secret lies in covering the necessary square meters: it's not mandatory to completely cover the wall surfaces, but only do so as needed according to the requirement and the desired aesthetic. We can cover only the walls where there are sanitary fixtures and showers, leaving the rest of the walls free to receive paint and, why not, a touch of color," explains the ABVARQ architect.

Finally, when it comes to furniture, streamlining its use is also key to controlling expenses. “Small, simple vanities with shelves and custom-made medicine cabinet mirrors provide great storage capacity. Using mixed iron and natural wood furniture is a more modern alternative to classic melamine-coated furniture. Not skimping on quality fixtures and fittings will save you a lot of headaches in the future,” Santiago recommends and concludes.
