How Argentina’s Milei Screwed Up by Hitching His Wagon to Trump

Not only hitching to Trump but especially to Israel. I don't get why he is so nuts about this? Jewish people are a very tiny fraction in Argentina. I don't understand this? Can anyone explain it to me?

No one knew about his devotion. A few weeks before the election he was in the Catholic Church. Strange for many of us. He was raised Catholic and I guess he still is. I don't think he converted yet.

It was strange immediately after winning election to go to NYC to visit the Ohel.

Many of my friends here in BA are Jewish. We have a large population of about 200k people. But most of my Jewish friends think he is crazy. He is crazy for Trump and Trump seems to be crazy for Israel so now that makes Milei crazy for Israel. Good as most don't like it. We are all getting sick of him.

My friends finally tell me I was right about him.

Here’s the thing—this has almost nothing to do with how many Jewish people live in Argentina.

Yes, the Jewish community here is small (though the largest in Latin America). But foreign policy isn’t a headcount. Countries don’t pick allies based on population size.

Milei’s stance comes down to three things:

  1. Ideology
He sees the world as “the West vs. socialism.” In his mind, Israel and the U.S. are on his side of that line. That’s the core of it.
  2. Personal belief
He’s not just casually supportive—he’s openly said he’s a “fanatic of Israel” and has studied Judaism. That’s unusual for a president, and it clearly shapes his decisions.
  3. Strategy
Aligning with Israel and the U.S. signals a break from Argentina’s past and pulls the country closer to Western power centers. It’s geopolitical positioning.
So the real question isn’t “why support Israel if the Jewish population is small?”

It’s:
“What kind of world does Milei believe Argentina should belong to?”

Answer that, and his choices make a lot more sense.

Good points but what happens if the world ends up hating the USA and Israel?

Then the world ends up hating Argentina. But it already hates the USA.

Global attitudes toward the United States are mixed, but surveys consistently show that unfavorable views rise during periods of controversial foreign policy, military interventions, or political polarization. For example, a 2023 Pew Research Center study found that while many countries still hold positive views of the U.S., significant portions of the global population express distrust or criticism of U.S. influence and leadership.

This War is very unpopular and I'm betting it will get more unpopular with time. Trump seems like he got sucked into this. He assumed it would end quickly. Big mistake.

What a shame everything he campaigned on is gone now. I know many that voted for him but just totally disagree with this war.

And if Israel wants it so bad they should send in their own ground troops all of their own.

FOX NEWS POLL: President Trump’s approval rating dipped to 41% in March, and 59% of registered voters now disapprove of him — the highest disapproval of either of his terms.Republican approval fell to a second-term low of 84%, down from 92% last March.Among Democrats, 95% disapprove, marking the fourth time this term Democratic disapproval of Trump reaches a record high. Among independents, 25% approve and 75% disapprove.

It was mainly/only Trump supporters who believed him in the first place.
That is a good point. I sent in my mail in ballot to vote for Harris. Granted she wasn't a great choice either but I somehow knew Trump would screw it up.

They are spending over $2.2 billion dollars a DAY on the war trying to get the Straight open when it was open before this mess. 🤡
