Argentina’s elections: an explainer for Donald Trump

I don't think Donald Trump even knows too much about the mid-term elections coming up in a few weeks. Half the time he sounds like he thinks Milei is on the ballot for this election. This is a good piece on the upcoming elections.

Thank you for posting this. This is what I don't understand. They have so little support. Even if they do very well most of this country is socialists and never will support Milei. Zero chance of absolute majority by Milei in either house even if they kill the elections and do very well which does not seem like that will be the case.

Milei's special powers which he had after he got elected seem to have vanished which pushed most of the important stuff through. With all the scandals with his sister and him I am not sure they are making progress and the exchange rate and emergency bail outs seem to prove this.

The local elections in September were ugly and many of my friends that live in BA have flipped on their support. Still I don't know if voting for the opposition is a solution either. That mess with Espert was another blunder by Milei. Why would they put such a flawed candidate on the ballot? And Milei still supported him up until the end until everyone around him told him that he had to abandon him.

Milei's judgement seems to be terrible.

The problem in this country is every politician no matter which side they are on is stealing. One can argue no one can compare to Cristina but honestly I think if Karina Milei was given enough time in office she might give Cristina a run for her money. I have heard nothing but terrible things about her. I am not sure what it will take for Milei to ax his sister but I am sure there is no way he wouldn't know about these activities. A shame as he has some good ideas.

Milei and team have made a lot of mistakes. They all seem to hate one another. He isn't even on speaking terms with his own VP.

It is hard to say what will happen in the election. So many people didn't turn out in last month's election. Unemployment seems like it is going up. More people I know in CABA are losing jobs. People can smell the desperation now. People would rather have a job with rising costs vs. lower inflation and no job at all.

More magazines are writing how Milei is botching things.

The LLA party sounds so weak. Even if they have a decent turn out this weekend in the election can they really make a dent in things?

They are in turmoil. I heard today that people are jumping ship and leaving. Clarin reported today that the Foreign Minister is quitting. He has been on the job less than a year. He is the second person to have this job since Milei started.

Didn't he fire the last Foreign Minister? Sounds like a lot of turnover for a guy that has only been in office 2 years.

Is this really a thing? Like alcohol would prevent you from making a good decision? Hilarious.
Yes it is true. They stop selling alcohol anywhere from 8 PM on Saturday before the election on Sunday until the polls close on Sunday usually about 6 PM or so. They are serious too with prison sentences of 15 days to 6 months.

Did not know this. Is this in restaurants also? So even at a restaurant no wine?

I doubt they would arrest anyone because someone would just pay a bribe to the police to get off. They do have municipal inspectors that go around and check but my guess is someone could easily pay the officer a bribe and no problem. In all my years here I have never seen anyone sell alcohol during these hours Betsy mentioned.

I can't wait to see how the elections turn out sunday night and what will happen on Monday morning. Just read this and was great. Things are going to be really good for Milei on Monday or really bad. Let's see!

It's hard to make heads or tails with everything I am reading online. His approval ratings are terrible with 60% approving but I don't know how accurate these polls are? Why does his party think they will do well if unapproval ratings are so high? Just saw this on NPR.

It feels like LLA has made a lot of mistakes lately. Difficult to ask people to suffer austerity when your party is getting accused of stealing from public programs. That may be the straw that broke the camels back.
