Expat Life: Local Discoveries, Global Connections

Favorite neighborhoods for Expats to live in Buenos Aires? With the best vibe and characteristics for me?

I would go off the beaten track and go out to places like Caballito, Villa del Parque and Villa Devoto
I like these neighborhoods fine but they are a bit too far away and off the beaten track for me. My problem is that all my friends when they come or the ones living here all live in Palermo or a few in Recoleta and it is too far out.

San Telmo is dumpy to me especially late at night. Went to a club there last weekend and was sketchy AF. To me the best neighborhood is still Recoleta.

ghost you have the jim syndrome. check the dates. while i read the old posts i am pretty sure jenn already has a place. curious what she chose. i chose palermo. las heras y ugarteche. 34 restaurants in a three block area in front of me. no dog poop. 2 supermercados with in the block, casa de cambio, pharmacy and hardware stores. can’t ask for more. i would not buy in recoleta. the buildings are old with old problems. nice to visit as well as las canitas. time has proven i made the right decision. everything to close and is an old jewish neighborhood. its one of the things i liked. the will get up from their table and help a disabled person cross the street

The "Jim syndrome". I like that. It is fun sometimes to see answers to posts. Las Heras y Ugarteche is a great area! You chose well. Very clean area. I disagree about Recoleta. "the buildings are old" is kind of funny. The quality in the old buildings is much better than the new junk they are building. The construction in the old buildings is magnificent. My friend lives in a 100+ year building in Recoleta and I marvel each time I visit him. They built stuff to last back then.

I like Recoleta and Retiro I think has the most beautiful buildings but some of Retiro is dead at night and too close to the bus station and the shantytown I don't like.

Wrong. I never came to Buenos Aires. I cancelled and changed my ticket a few times. There was a mosquito invasion the first trip and I'm severely allergic to mosquito bites. Then another time all my expat friends already left Buenos Aires because they said it was too expensive and the power and internet kept going out in their Airbnb. I work remote and depend on internet so that was a no go.

I am reading online and see there is still rolling blackouts so that looks like a good decision. Now I am reading about bug invasions again. I think I will skip BA for now.

jenn thanks for keeping us up on your decision. i really don’t think argentina is for you. it takes an adventurous soul that can roll with the punches. there is so much to like and alot of punched to roll with
Agree with this sentiment. Most people will love a vacation here but I am not sure about an extended stay if you are a problematic person that is allergic to mosquito bites, can't be bothered with internet outages or electricity black outs. I have stayed many times and dealt with internet issues. As @jbeas176 mentioned it takes somewhat of an adventurous person to live here full time.

Never come here in summer if you are allergic to mosquito bites anytime I accidentally fall asleep with a window open I wake up bitten and bleeding

Poor @Jenn would never make it here in the summer if she is allergic. I can't go without AC on non stop in the summer. Too hot and too humid. It is miserable in January and probably why everyone is outside of the city and takes the entire month off!
