Travel Buquebus vs. Colonia Express – Best Option for Uruguay Trip?

Hi everyone!

I’m planning a short trip from Buenos Aires to Uruguay and trying to decide between Buquebus and Colonia Express. I’ve heard mixed things about both, and I’m not sure which one is better in terms of comfort, reliability, border process, and overall experience.

I'll probably be traveling light, and I’m open to either Montevideo or Colonia as a first stop, just want the smoothest option!

If anyone has taken either ferry recently, I’d really appreciate your thoughts or recommendations. Is it worth paying more for Buquebus? Or is Colonia Express just as good?

Thanks in advance! 😊

I’ve taken both, and honestly, Buquebus feels way more professional and comfortable. Bigger boats, smoother ride, and the terminals are a bit more organized. It’s a bit pricier, but worth it, especially if you want a more relaxing trip.

Colonia Express is definitely the cheaper option. It’s not as fancy and the terminal in Buenos Aires can be a little chaotic, but I’ve never had major issues. If you're just trying to get across the river without spending too much, it gets the job done.

Just did BA to Montevideo with Buquebus and came back via Colonia Express. Buquebus was super smooth, fast immigration, comfy seats. Colonia Express was a bit slower, and the ferry was smaller and more crowded, but it worked fine. I’d use Buquebus again if it’s not crazy expensive that day.
