Bloomberg: Argentina Inflation Sped Up for Fifth Straight Month in January

Fake fake fake. It is much higher than this and everyone knows it.
Totally agree about the fake inflation numbers. Why do you think the head of inflation quit. He didn't want to be associated with this lie. Most things going up. This Reuters article nails it with many things going up 6.8%. You can't eat a t-shirt!

I just read the same article. Very telling that one of the Godfather of Bitcoin, Saifedean Ammmous (author of The Bitcoin Standard) calls Milei a fraud. He has been warning about Milei for a while.

I think no matter which side of the political spectrum you are in Argentina, one thing that everyone should agree on is inflation isn't what the government is claiming it is. It's certainly more than the 2.9% per month they are talking about. The fact that the head of INDEC quit last month says it all.

The problem is when you can't trust the numbers or the government feels like they have to lie about them, it creates even less trust. The price of many things has jumped up. Most of my friends there are all complaining about how tough things are. They mostly have kids and are straight shooters and ALL are saying inflation is much more than 2.9% a month.

My accountant and Godmother of one of my kids went to NYC a few weeks ago and she said she didn't have any sticker shock at all because it was cheaper to eat in NYC vs. BA. I'm sure you can find cheap meals in BA but honestly I was running into the same thing in January when I was there.

Interesting that the author of The Bitcoin Standard is so down on Milei. I did not see that before. Thank you for sharing.

I would agree that inflation is higher than what the government claims. But governments have been lying about that in Argentina for a long time. They have a big incentive to lie about that. I don't know of anyone on the street that believes that.

What do you all reckon the true monthly inflation is right now when you factor in everything? Using a basket of realistic things for the typical Argentine?
I like to get the sealed ojo de bifes or bife de chorizos at Coto. Better priced and quality than most meat shops imo. In June of 2025 last year they were 13.000 to 14.000 pesos a kilo. That price was double that in January to March of this year to about 25.000 to 28.000 Pesos. So the price of Beef has practically doubled at the Coto in half a year. Milk and butter seem to have increased 25% in that time. The price of Gas has gone up at YPF from 1.100 a Liter to 1.450 depending on the 35% to 40%. Which with the blue increase it is just about a $1 USD or $1.25 USD which is a price that is making people mad in the USA at this time. Yerba has not gone up much since Milei entered office at about 5.000 a Kilo which with deregulation has gone been consistent since 2024. For Coffee, I buy the the Red and purple Cabrales brand. It has about 14.000 and has increased with the blue since June of last year. Pistachos have increased 2 to 3X in the last year for the demand of the Dubai styled stuff. Eggs have stayed consistent the last year, 30 eggs from a farm are about 11.000 Pesos, about 7.000 Pesos for the cheaper stuff. Peaches and Pears are about 3.000 to 4.000 Pesos a kilo right now. Delicious and in season. Now you know my diet you Cheap Bastard!

I think the real inflation probably is about 5% a month taking into account normal spending on groceries, a little dining out, utilities, transportation, condo fees and healthcare costs.

That matches what I have seen. I don't know why nuts are so expensive here. I also like Pistachios. Dairy and yoghurt has also gone up drastically. I don't know why with so much dairy here. Makes no sense to me. Beef has really gone up.

Just using the Good Stuff Index with your things it looks like your monthly inflation averages about 4.17% a month. He didn't include any condo fees, insurance, restaurant but if you added that in I would bet it matches my guest of 5% a month.

Gas prices at the pump in Argentina are up 9% just in the first few weeks of March. Doubt that will help Argentina's inflation numbers. But they will probably surprise surprise say inflation is 2.9% again. 🤡
