Newcomer Which places can I go to learn tango that aren’t too formal?

I’ve taken a few casual classes at Villa Malcolm and really enjoyed them, but there aren't many beginners there. I’m looking for places that either focus on beginners or have a larger beginner community. Any recommendations?

Buenos Aires has an amazing tango community! I am at the milonga level which is more advanced but I started many years ago.

La Viruta in Palermo is one of the most famous beginner-friendly milongas in BA.

They have lots of milongas every week, many beginner classes before the dance starts, a huge dance floor, and mixed levels with many beginners. It is where I learned.

DNI Tango in Congreso

This is more of a tango school but there is also a social community. Very friendly staff and many locals that are also beginners, many regular beginner classes as well as practice sessions. This is great if you want a structured intro and a bit of social dancing.

Salon Canning in Palermo

Great for beginners and intermediate level. They have a big traditional milonga and many beginner classes before the social dancing. They have many different alternative dances too (milonga, tango, vals). It is more formal as a milonga but very open to beginners, especially in the early hours.

Tango listed some great places but you also might want to check out Meetup and some Facebook groups. Meetup has some informal beginner groups that organize group classes, practice groups and casual social dance. Great for learning other beginners.

Also try La Cathedral Club

Iconic place. Go very early. It has a younger crowd so you won't feel out of place. It is more alternative and has more of a bohemian vibe vs. traditional milonga. But nice for something different.

Hoy Milonga isn't a place but it's a community that focuses on a more relaxed, low-pressure milonga. It is hosted in casual spaces and lots of beginners. Usually free or small donation. You can check online for current events.
