What happens if Argentina gets too expensive? What are alternative cities/countries to move to when it's overpriced in Argentina?

That is what it sounded like. @Darksider415 what do you think it ultimately came down to? People just not having a choice or the left not going out to vote? It is interesting to see the results. I also heard from friends that seems like more homeless lately. This conflicts with the numbers the government is putting out about poverty rates going down.
I would ask Piranha, only one who called it correctly in this forum. Everyone else said Milei was going to lose.

Did they say he would lose or just they wouldn't be as successful. Most of the stuff online said his party was going to pick up seats. Just was a matter of more or less than 35% wasn't it? Looks like there still isn't a quorum with any party.

I don't know about online predictions but in this forum it was very negative, certainly had this outsider believing Milei could lose. Only Piranha said he would win and I suspect the reasoning was accurate as well (I doubt the US had much to do with it).

Milei's 14 point loss in the Bs As provinical election early September made many , including myself, think that there was no way he would win more than a few seats in the mid term elections.
A couple of friends who are party members actually said to me that the best result they could hope for was to lose by only a few points.
Obviously something happened in the last two weeks to change things.
I really dont think it was Trumps intervention - in fact I know that annoyed quite a few people.
When people saw the possibility of the return of CFKs cronies and the Campora , I think they decided it was worth giving Milei another couple of years to try and sort the mes out

The 14 point loss in the Provincial election is what got most people spooked but in the end it was exactly what Piranha said that people like to complain but when it comes down to it there was no alternative to letting Milei continue on with his plan. Things are in better shape now vs. when he started for most people.

It seemed like no one knew for sure how the vote would turn out. Many people complaining but I would never base local conditions based on what expats think. Most of the times their wishes and hopes aren't aligned with how majority of locals interests are aligned.

It was similar with the last US election. Media and consultants kept telling us that Harris was going to win in a landslide because only sub-humans supported Trump. What surprised even the consultants though was that a lot of voters in the middle didn't actually support Trump (or couldn't admit it), but on election day they just couldn't stomach another four years of really bad government by preachy, hypocritical elites.

Correct. I never trust polls in either the USA or Argentina now because even if people are complaining or disapproval ratings, you never know how they will end up voting. BA also had heavy flooding in many poorer areas, I'm sure that didn't help either as it was very close in BA but that doesn't account for nationwide appeal. Hopefully Milei's party can make progress with some of these reforms. It won't be a walk in the park. Nothing is easy here.

From being in the middle of it for the past three and a half years, including working locally at one point... It's far, far more anti-Milei than it was at this point last year. People are getting fed up and I'm seeing far, far more folks going through the trash container across the street this month than I have at any point in the past year.

It's not looking great for LLA, imo.
Like @Darksider415 I am noticing more and more people going through dumpsters. Supposedly poverty is decreasing but it doesn't seem like it. Sounds like homelessness is actually going up.

Sad to see homeless #s increase. But Milei just increased disability payments so hopefully that helps. If he is going to win in 2027 he will have to probably increase assistance to those that need it the most.

The "raw" version is even worse estimating that the Argentine peso is overvalued 56.7% vs. the peso.

Big Mac Index: Argentina 2nd most overvalued behind Switzerland

The Economist Magazine does a survey every 6 months comparing the price of the a Big Mac of countries around the world.

According to their calculations the Swiss franc is the most overvalued in the world with 38% overvaluation, giving them the most expensive Big Mac in the world. But followed behind is the Argentine peso which they calculate is 20.1% over valued.

The Big Mac Index (IBM) is based on the theory of "Purchasing Power Parity" developed in the 19th century by the Swedish economist Gustav Casel, according to which a currency is "aligned" with another if it allows you to buy the same basket of goods at the same value, expressed in either of the two currencies. The IBM, by taking a simple good, identical in any country in the world, allows the theory to be tested more simply, without resorting to price indices based on different consumption baskets.

Such is the most "raw" version of the index, of which The Economist also publishes a "gourmet" version, taking into account the level of GDP per inhabitant of each country. In the gourmet version, the Argentine peso becomes not the second, but directly the most overvalued currency in the world, with 56.7% overvaluation, leaving behind the overvaluation of the Swiss franc, which becomes 48.3% and that of the Uruguayan peso (42%).

Using the "raw" version Argentina's peso is overvalued 56.7% against the US dollar which matches many economists estimates.

Argentina is losing competitiveness with other countries. Tourism is dropping off tremendously as international tourists are going to other destinations and domestic tourism is flowing to other neighboring countries like Brazil.

It looks like Argentina is still holding steady as the 2nd most expensive country in the world for a Big Mac behind only Switzerland.

I have noticed from January 2025 to January 2026 my building expenses jumped up a big percentage. About 3 times the price it started out at. Still not too bad compared to the USA but percentage-wise a big jump up. How much are your building expenses @jbeas176? I had an Embassy that wanted to rent my apartment in Palermo last year. They wanted a year lease but I wanted to use it when I went down but now I think I wouldn't mind a yearly lease if the price was right.

How are you finding these diplomatic stays @jbeas176? Is this through a realtor?

Didn't understand your post. You rent your apartment to embassies and you are still out of pocket? That sounds depressing. I am making a double digit return on my rental.

$3600 US a year? That doesn't sound too bad. $300 bucks a month. How are you losing money renting out to embassies? Don't they pay all of the expenses?

first ben. i enclude everyhing plus a bottle of wine. i only visited twice. just started getting the embassy people. i don’t do long term rentals 3 months max. where i am getting them is the mother of the french embassador stayed there and she liked it. the person that rents it for me now lives 2 floors below me and works at the embassy. it just started growing from there. alot of it may have to do with no paperwork. stay pay and hasta luega. i was expecting more stays last year. we will see this year. i usesd to break even. its not alot of money but was surprisingly higher. i would sooner not work the space than having people i don’t know much about stay there. same paint for 20 year

there was a plumbing problem with the ice cream store. the owner a tenant in the building sued us for her problem. if i was here i could have fought back. it was his misuse of the system. sure he was putting things down the sewer that did not belong. i am trying to get ahold of the plumber that fix it and tell me what he found.

I would have thought if you were renting to embassies you would be getting big rentals. Their option is probably either fancy hotels or nice apartments. Sounds like someone is making money in the middle but doesn't sound like you.

But how much of a problem could that have been? Again sounds like someone is pulling a fast one on you. But in a nutshell that is all of Argentina.
