To be fair do you really believe that locals cared what Trump said? I seriously doubt any local was affected by Trump. When it came down to it there was no other choice for most people that supported him before. Voter turn out was very low. We are talking covid type levels. People thought that would hurt Milei but it went the other way around.

All the negative chatter about Milei doing poor before might have kept many Peronistas at home thinking their vote was not needed.

I don't think it was a bait and switch. The US committed swap lines in case they were needed, they didn't say $20 billion was coming in the mail tomorrow. The election went their way so at least for now the US can move on. Which is good because frankly there are far more important issues to deal with at home, like a government shutdown that is historic in length.
