The presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, stated that the Executive has already made the corresponding budget adjustments and stated that the amounts for the sector were frozen in 2023: “All complaints come with President Milei,” he noted.

The Government ruled out additional university funds due to the increase in fees.

In the midst of the strong impact of the increases in the rates of the different public services, the university sector has been warning of the difficulties they will have to sustain operation in the midst of a strong adjustment in the real budget for the sector. However, the Government ruled out today that there may be new items for the Higher Studies Houses to face the new prices of services.

In his usual press conference, the presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, assured that the Executive has already made the corresponding budgetary adjustments, and stated that it is a problem that universities pose not for now, but that it will happen to them in the future.

“It is a problem of lack of funds, that because of an electricity bill they are not going to close the universities. There is a budgetary issue for discussion in the background if the budget items are not increased. If necessary, it will be discussed,” he stressed.

The official also stated that “the items were frozen during 2023 and I did not hear any complaints last year,” and said that he was surprised that “all the complaints come from President Milei.”

“There is not going to be any budget change due to electricity bills, that is not going to happen,”
he concluded.

Since almost the beginning of Javier Milei's administration, university authorities have been warning of the consequences of the strong adjustment implemented by the Government. The complaints deepened with the new tariff scheme for public services, which implies a sharp increase in rates.

Last week, hundreds of students gathered on the steps of the UBA Faculty of Law under the slogan “ Win the street, so as not to lose the classroom ” with the aim of taking classes outdoors, in the midst of the crisis that public universities are going through due to funding cuts sent by the national government. The initiative was called by different professors, including Judge Alejandro Slokar, along with students and different members of the university community.

The current situation is due to the national government's decision to extend the 2023 budget without updating for inflation. “The slogan we used was 'win the street so as not to lose the classroom' to, in some way, make transparent and make visible the crisis that the public university is going through,” Slokar explained in dialogue with the press.

Last week the news broke that the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the National University of La Plata received an electricity bill of 14 million pesos, 400% more than the previous month.

“Last month we received an invoice for 14 million pesos when we had been paying almost 4 million . This in a context of freezing the budget for operating expenses. So it has been very terrible news that puts us on the verge of being able to guarantee the basic functions of our academic unit,” said Mauricio Erben, dean of that academic unit, in statements to AM 750.

Also during the weekend that the National University of Comahue went into default. “Please, let's not look the other way. "Let's not be part of the generation that lets the Public University die ," they expressed in a statement from "Let's Defend the UNCo," a group made up of students, teachers and non-teachers," he stated.

“Paying the rates is going to be impossible,” the vice-rector of the UBA, Emiliano Yacobitti , had warned weeks ago, when the increase in public service rates had not yet been made official.

“The Government's decision to defund to this degree affects because we are not going to be able to pay the rates and the increase has not yet been implemented. It is as if from 100 pesos, you get 30, that affects the things that can be done ,” he said in statements to Radio Miter.
