Buenos Aires Ranked as Top City for Digital Nomads in The Economist’s Annual Ranking.
The annual ranking of The Economist magazine has placed Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, among the cities most chosen by digital nomads. In a new edition of The Global Liveability Index 2023, the magazine distinguished Buenos Aires as the city with the best quality of life in Latin America.
For the second consecutive year and the eighth time in nine years, Buenos Aires topped the list of Spanish-speaking cities in Latin America. Santiago de Chile secured the second spot, followed by Montevideo. The study included 173 cities from around the world.
The ranking was developed by The Economist’s “intelligence team,” which considered five categories: stability, healthcare, culture/environment, education, and infrastructure. Buenos Aires excelled in these areas, earning high scores in education, culture and environment, infrastructure, and health.
The research also revealed that living in cities today is, at worst, “a little better” than in 1998. Cities achieved an average score of 76.2 out of 100, the best result in 25 years.
Buenos Aires was ranked alongside cities like New York, Rome, and Edinburgh, surpassing Abu Dhabi and Shanghai. The city’s vibrant cultural scene, including its large number of theaters, was highlighted by The Economist.
Globally, the top five cities in the ranking were Vienna, Copenhagen, Melbourne, Sydney, and Vancouver. The rest of the top 10 included cities from Canada, Switzerland, Australia, and Japan.
On the other end of the spectrum, Damascus in Syria was ranked as the worst place to live, while Caracas took that position in Latin America. The list of the five worst cities in Latin America also included Guatemala City, Aguas Calientes, Mexico City, and Santiago de Querétaro.
The report indicated that the average score of Latin American cities increased in this edition, with only Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, and Montevideo surpassing an average score of 80 out of 100.
Fernando Straface, Secretary General and International Relations of the City, stated, “Buenos Aires is consolidated as an excellent city to live, visit, study, and work. Quality of life is a key factor in the competition to attract visitors and talent to cities. This ranking confirms why Buenos Aires is one of the most chosen cities by digital nomads in the world and one of the best for international students in Latin America.”
The Global Liveability Index measures the quality of life in cities across different categories. Buenos Aires obtained a perfect score of 100 in education, the highest possible score, and high scores in culture and environment, infrastructure, and health.
