With the hope of a new life and of fulfilling the Argentine dream, thousands of ships arrived at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century to the port of Buenos Aires from Europe. Many of them were Spaniards , who imported a new destiny for their community with their arrival. This spirit of belonging was what led to the creation of different groups where immigrants could meet and share customs far from home.

One of the most emblematic spaces was the Spanish Hospital , built in 1877 and which today is sold for US$22 million . Its origin dates back to 20 years before its founding date, when under the name of “Spanish Chamber of Commerce and Beneficent Asylum” the first Spanish company in Argentina was born. In fact, it was the first Spanish group to be established in the Río de la Plata after independence. Its objective was to serve as a charity home for indigent Spaniards who arrived with few resources to the South American shore.

The Spanish Hospital took five years to build and was inaugurated in 1877

The community grew in members and strength, and 20 years later construction of the Spanish Hospital began . On the site of Belgrano Avenue and La Rioja Street, it took five years to be erected to finally be inaugurated on December 8, a date that granted it the dedication of the Holy Virgin Immaculate Conception of Mary and patron saint of Spain.

The health complex that today occupies the entire block of Balvanera was a nucleus of the community and by the beginning of the 20th century it already had 80,000 beneficiaries. Emblematic to this day , the building is consecrated as an exponent of the work of architect Julián García Núñez.

Financial problems altered the fate of the building and in 2017 the company that managed the health center declared bankruptcy. That year, PAMI took over co-administration so that the hospital could continue operating.

In September of this year, the National Institute of Social Services for Retirees and Pensioners (PAMI) invested $13 million in new equipment, such as the new imaging diagnostic area with the latest generation resonator and tomograph, new operating rooms, a new monitoring area ; and a day center and a new oncology service . The transformation process culminated when the façade was enhanced and the bricks were changed for a modern, glazed front.

The sale and those interested

After almost 150 years of experience, the health center is sold at a base price of US$22 million or its equivalent in pesos according to the value of the MEP dollar . The hospital will pass into the hands of a new owner through a best offer procedure, in which a judge orders the sale and gives instructions to carry it out . This was ordered by the National Commercial Court of First Instance number 22, headed by Dr. Eduardo Malde.

According to the judge handling the matter, interested buyers have until November 28 to present their offer . However, between the lines it says that they must “exceed the base by at least 10% and deposit 10% in the judicial account of the case as a guarantee to maintain the offer,” the judge highlighted.

The entity that purchases it must maintain it with its current destination as a hospital.

According to the provisions of the court, it is sold “with the obligation to maintain it with its current destination as a hospital , with the conservation of the source of work for the current staffing, with recognition of the seniority of the dependents, as well as the continuity of the contracts with professionals and assistants who currently regularly provide services for which they receive fees,” noted the Official Gazette. Currently the center has 71,000 members, more than 300 beds and 1,700 employees.

Although no entity declared openly, the head of PAMI Luana Volnovich left clues in different statements that would indicate that the Institute could be its future owner. “ We are very close to realizing the dream of having a new hospital in CABA. It is very important to buy it, that it be a real PAMI hospital. Now we are co-owners and that does not give you total independence,” she had said in dialogue with BAE Negocios.
