April 15, 2026
A study by the University of Buenos Aires analyzes the increases in various household services, and the cost of renting housing shows the largest increase.

The largest increase was recorded in the category of housing, related services and other fuels, which accumulated a sum close to 400%. Ricardo Pristupluk
Rents and household services - such as water, electricity and gas - saw increases that doubled the general inflation rate between December 2023 and February 2026, according to a report by the Center for Studies for the Argentine Recovery of the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).
In concrete terms, the increases during that period were :
- Rentals: 423% (according to contracts updated by the Casa Propia coefficient)
- Water: 366%
- Electrical energy: 370%
- Natural gas: 766%
It is important to clarify that the study considers contracts signed under the Casa Propia program: the index created by Law 27,737, in effect from October 17, 2023, until December 29, 2023, the date on which Javier Milei's Emergency Decree repealed it. These contracts were updated every six months based on this index, so adjustments began in April 2024 for contracts initiated in October 2023.

In second place in the report was the communications sector, with a cumulative increase of 321% , that is, 122 percentage points above the overall level, but 79 points below the increase in housing. This was followed by education, with 279%, and transportation with a variation of 255%.
In contrast, the categories with the smallest increases in the UBA study were food and non-alcoholic beverages, with 182%, household equipment and maintenance, with 12%, and clothing and footwear with 106%.
Monthly increases
If, instead of accumulated inflation, the monthly variation is considered, the trend remains the same. According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), in February 2026 compared to January, the Housing category showed the largest increase, at 6.8%.These increases are mainly explained by "the rise in gas, electricity and water rates in most provinces, and the modification of the schemes of beneficiaries of the rates with and without subsidies," the platform states.
The monthly increase in housing is double that of food and non-alcoholic beverages; and exceeds the general level by four percentage points.
