The ochre color of a façade that has regained some of its life has begun to peek out from between the planks and scaffolding at one end of Plaza Francia in Buenos Aires' Recoleta neighborhood . An old light blue color can also be seen on another wall, though it's brighter than last time. It's the only remaining vestige of the traditional Buenos Aires Design , because that place, as it was years ago, no longer exists. Its transformation is moving toward its final stage: Oh! Buenos Aires , the new shopping center that promises to be the most modern in the city, will open its doors there .
"The idea is for it to open in November. We're preparing everything for that to happen," the people who have been carrying out the megaproject since 2023, 17 years after the last time one opened in Buenos Aires, told LA NACION.

Of the historic Design building, only the façade remains, a skeleton protected as cultural heritage. To preserve its original color and find the exact palette, the project managers conducted a thorough survey with the Clorindo Testa Foundation, as the architect was one of the main designers behind the building, which opened in 1993. Everything else was demolished and rebuilt: the new building will bear little resemblance to that once iconic designer shopping center.
This is what the Oh! Buenos Aires shopping center in Recoleta will look like.
The renovated building no longer has two floors. The shopping center will now have three fully integrated floors and a semi-open shopping center concept. Where the enclosed parking lot once stood, four open-air courtyards now extend , each with a distinct setting: a Corrientes palm tree, a fountain with light and sound effects, and slides between floors.

"The idea is for people to come and stay for a long time. Their goal is to come here to enjoy the gastronomic offerings and different types of experiences, not just to shop," explained Fernando Brocca, in charge of the shopping center's commercial architecture.

The Oh! Buenos Aires shopping mall will offer 500 parking spaces in the parking lot below Plaza Francia and approximately 30 dining options located on the building's historic terrace , along a 160-meter arcade. Each location will have its own indoor and outdoor space for tables and chairs. In total, the mall will feature approximately 100 retail stores , including national and international brands.

The former Buenos Aires Auditorium, which stood out at the top of the building on Azcuénaga Street, will house a Jano's Eventos event hall, and a major gym chain, Smart Fit, will occupy the space where the traditional Hard Rock Café used to be.

Much of the interior design of the mall's hallways will be industrial-style, with exposed pipes and neutral flooring , said architect Marcela Farruggio of the Sambresqui studio, which is in charge of the project management and direction.

Towards the Plaza Francia side, an original dome, where a gift shop used to be located underground, has been restored and will be one of the eight entrances to the new promenade.
According to LA NACION, the investment group has invested approximately $20 million in the megaproject . The concession contract signed with the City Government is for the next 15 years, with the possibility of extending it for another five.

The renovation of the building also involved dismantling obsolete installations that hadn't been maintained in over a decade, such as old escalators (both working and non-working) . In addition, a panoramic elevator will be installed in the coming days, covering all three levels.
