From 10 a.m., social organizations carried out actions in 500 points in the country. The protest took place 48 hours before the CGT strike. They complained against “the adjustment, the elimination of social programs and the closures of dining rooms”

The protesters burned tires as part of the protest at the Olivos residence
Social organizations held a national day of protest this morning, with cuts and mobilizations throughout the country , including a demonstration in front of Quinta de Olivos , 48 hours after the national strike promoted by the CGT and the two CTA.

Around 11 o'clock, the picketing groups arrived at the official residence of President Javier Milei and a climate of tension was generated , where there was pushing and burning of tire covers to support the blockade of the street. The protesters were face to face with the Federal Police (PFA) , who prevented the movement from arriving near the home with a security cordon.

As a precaution, the neighborhood's stores and businesses lowered their blinds and closed their doors in the face of the hostile scenario. Fortunately, the protest ended shortly after 12:30, without major incidents . The columns withdrew along Maipú Avenue - the same route they came from - with the custody of the mega-operation in charge of the federal forces, composed of the PFA and the National Gendarmerie.

During the measure, Eduardo Belliboni , leader of the Polo Obrero, and Silvia Saravia , from Barrios de Pie-Libres del Sur, demanded a meeting so that they could be attended by a representative of the authorities of the Executive Branch, while the deputy commissioner in charge of the application of the protocol requested the release of the street. The leaders alleged that since December there has been no dialogue with the Minister of Human Capital, Sandra Pettovello , who is in charge of social programs and assistance to the most vulnerable sectors.

“We need an official who is responsible and has decision-making power,” the protest organizers demanded, without success.

The columns began to gather at 10 in Puente Saavedra to march towards Olivos. The area was in traffic chaos at the beginning of the call and there was a total blockage on Maipú Avenue , near Zufriategui.

The force measure aimed to repudiate “the adjustment, the elimination of social programs and the closures of dining rooms” due to lack of food. “We denounce the scrapping of the Empower Work program and the halving of the salary of 200,000 workers in the sector and the freezing from November 2023. We continue on the streets for genuine work and all our demands,” said the organizers, who pointed out against President Javier Milei and the Minister of Human Capital, Sandra Pettovello .

During the protest, the picketers once again measured forces in the street with the Government . Left-wing organizations and social movements, enrolled in the Popular Economy Workers Union (UTEP) , cut some arteries in the Buenos Aires suburbs and the AMBA.

Previously, the Minister of National Security, Patricia Bullrich , ordered an operation to ensure compliance with the anti-picketing protocol. The City Police had anticipated the same. However, there were no operations to clear the cuts that were made during the day.

The social leaders mobilized for several demands: layoffs in the State, scrapping of social programs, disinvestment in urbanization works in popular neighborhoods, reductions in plans and food assistance to 45 thousand popular soup kitchens and picnic areas .

Javier Milei and Sandra Pettovello took food from soup kitchens and destroyed social programs, which is why we mobilized in 500 points in the country,” Belliboni warned.

"We denounce the scrapping of the Empower Work program and the halving of the salary of 200,000 workers in the sector and its freezing from November 2023," said Eduardo Belliboni (Franco Fafasuli).

The conflict with Minister Pettovello

Since the beginning of her administration, the head of Human Capital has maintained a tense situation with the social leaders: she did not receive them personally, she took away the administration of social plans such as Empowering Work and the distribution of 4.2% of dry food to the dining rooms they manage. From her portfolio they stated that 55% of those places “do not exist” and that they only served 8% of the destination of those foods. Social leaders such as Belliboni, from the Polo Obrero, and Nicolás Caropresi from the MTE assured this medium that they have this documentation in their files, but they never requested it.

The epicenter of the march took place in front of the Olivos presidential estate , located on Avenida Maipú at 2100, between Villate and Malaver, in Olivos, Buenos Aires district of Vicente López.

The hydrant trucks fired volleys to prevent the advance of the columns and disperse the traffic interruption

The cruelty of this government towards the humble people cannot be tolerated anymore. They have not sent a single kilo of food since they took office. Without a doubt, they are attacking the community organization because breaking the bonds of solidarity that we organizations build is the only way they can move forward with the country model that they want to impose," Tama Kallsen , spokesperson for the Darío Santillán Popular Front, told this media. He added: “From our place we are convinced that no one is saved alone and that is why we will continue fighting.”

Pettovello, who has never received social organizations, says that 50% of the soup kitchens do not exist. Well, if that were true, she does not deliver the food at 50%, which, if they exist, ”they denounce from the Piquetera Unit in a statement.

The text also states that: “Starting in May, the activities in the neighborhoods, schools, squares and parks that were maintained with the Empower Work will cease to exist. Along with that, school support, cultural and sports activities for young people and children from the poorest neighborhoods throughout the country also cease to exist.”

Belliboni also recalled that according to official announcements "productive activities such as the construction of popular housing, carpentry, blacksmithing are going to disappear."

The picketing organizations and social movements of the UTEP have already announced that they will mobilize Congress when the senators discuss the Bases Law. The intention is to prevent it from becoming law. The Truck Drivers Guild will do the same, as Pablo Moyano announced yesterday .

The protest was called by the UTEP, the Polo Obrero, Libres del Sur, the Darío Santillán Popular Front, the Classist and Combative Current (CCC) and the Movement of Excluded Workers (MTE), among other sectors.
Today's protest was called, among others, by the general secretary of the UTEP and leader of the Evita Movement, Alejandro “Peluca” Gramajo ; the leader of the Polo Obrero, Eduardo Belliboni ; Silvia Saravia from Libres del Sur; Dina Sánchez, representative of the Darío Santillán Popular Front; Juan Carlos Alderete , national coordinator of the Classist and Combative Current (CCC) and, among others, Nicolás Caropresi , leader of the Movement of Excluded Workers (MTE).

Some 40 organizations will take part in the measure, as the Argentina Rebel Movement MAR, the Coordinator for Social Change, the Front of Organizations in Struggle (FOL), the April 8 Movement, OLP Resist and Fight, MST Teresa also joined. Live, MTD Aníbal Verón, Votamos Luchar and among others the organizations that also make up the Piquetero Fighting Front.

Among the main cuts, in addition to Puente Saavedra and Milei's residence, the one that is planned to start at 10 in the morning at the Rotonda de Alpargatas , in Berazategui, also stands out; at the entrance to Lavallol, in Lomas de Zamora, in the so-called Bernal Triangle , in Quilmes.

Since the beginning of her administration, the Minister of Human Capital has received criticism from sectors of the popular economy. The official affirms that the oppositions are because she took away privileges, such as the management of social plans

Other picket columns plan to block the San Justo roundabout , in La Matanza and in Morón, the entrance to the Plaza Oeste complex at Avenida Vergara. In the City of La Plata they will hold a picket on the descent of the Buenos Aires-La Plata highway.

“We denounce the scrapping of the Empower Work program and the halving of the salary of 200,000 workers in the sector and the freezing from November 2023. We continue on the streets for genuine work and all our demands,” he told this medium, Belliboni, leader of the Polo Obrero.

Fall in wages in cooperatives

From the MTE, one of the organizations that are part of the UTEP, and referenced in the former presidential candidate of Unión por la Patria, Juan Grabois , they were also very critical of the federal administration.

“They continue to advance in destroying the little that had been built in these more than 20 years that we have been carrying out, organizing ourselves together with the popular economy. Finally, they destroyed the salaries of the workers who do the most work in the cooperatives and canteens,” he told Infobae . Nicolás Caropresi and explained that they are: “Cartoneras in charge of classifying materials in the green centers, cooks who despite the lack of food delivery continued to cook and organize collections to be able to have supplies, kids who accompany other kids in the fight against addictions, women who accompany other women in shelters to escape violence and hundreds of thousands of workers saw their income reduced by half with the elimination of the links and bonuses that existed in Empower Work.

The firing of a water cannon during the protest. The incidents were minor and there were no arrests.

For the social leader, these losses of achievements are a systematic plan to “destroy” the most vulnerable sectors. “First they took out the food, then the works in popular neighborhoods, they tried to destroy the cooperatives, and disappear the social monotax. In their hatred of some leaders, these revanchists with money are extremely cruel to those who have nothing . "

The MTE leader understood that these are some of the arguments to win the street. “We need decision makers to reveal the cruelty of their measures . They are converting the social salary and the policy of right and incentives to work into plans, that is, they do not intend to monitor nor are they putting together something in training that will guarantee access to the courses for the million colleagues, basically “They are turning a labor policy into outright lack of assistance,” said Caropresi.
