Most effective strategy to improving Spanish and getting fluent?

Does anyone experience the way I do, i.e. I probably am able to speak a bit of Spanish but understanding a local speak Spanish is a different ballgame. I am unable to comprehend at all and that takes away any motivation to practise Spanish outside my confinement. :-(

I speak just enough to be dangerous. 🤣 I want to learn so badly and try. Vocabulary really helped so even if I don't know everything I can communicate enough to what I need. But I just don't have the time to learn how I want until I'm probably retired.

I use a lot of Google Translate too but these are really amazing! Every time I come down people want to keep them. The last time I came I gave them to a friend that didn't speak English well. Very very good.

I use duolingo but it gives me a sense of false confidence. My main issue is that while I can try to form sentences to communicate. I don't understand what the other person replies most of the time 🫣
