The company that owns the main shopping malls in Buenos Aires confirmed the opening of the shopping center in the city of La Plata.
For years, La Plata carried an urban stigma: it was the "city without shopping malls ." There was even a radio show with that name. Now, that status is about to become a thing of the past.
The IRSA group, owner of the country's main shopping malls , led by Eduardo Elsztain, launched Distrito Diagonal , a mixed-use complex that will transform the city's commercial and residential profile.
The project is located on a 78,614 square meter plot strategically located between Camino General Belgrano, 511th Street, 19th Avenue and 514th Avenue, in the northern part of the capital of Buenos Aires , in front of two hypermarkets, and has approval to build 116,552 m² of mixed uses .
IRSA Propiedades Comerciales -which later merged with IRSA Inversiones y Representaciones SA- acquired corporate control and the entire property through the purchase of 100% of the shares of Centro de Entretenimientos La Plata SA (owner of 61.85% of the land) and the acquisition of the remaining 38.15% from third parties, in a transaction worth US$7.5 million .
There, the company announced that the direct investment is US$130 million , to which will be added indirect investments from tenants and complementary developments.

"More than a shopping mall, it will be a hub for urban integration designed to meet the new demands of the La Plata lifestyle," said the company, in a city with a strong university identity.
With this project, IRSA seeks to replicate in La Plata the mixed-use development model it has already consolidated in the city of Buenos Aires and its surrounding areas , integrating consumerism, work, and urban life in a single space. The complex is expected not only to revitalize the neighborhood but also to enhance the city's overall appeal as a hub for services, consumerism, and housing.
Commercial launch is planned for late 2025 or early 2026.
Although the City Council had given the green light to IRSA's investment in 2019, the project had been stalled for years. It was then reactivated in September 2024 and will now generate more than 1,000 direct jobs .
Construction is currently progressing, with 45% of the necessary contracts already awarded, including structural work, electrical installations, and gas connections.
The commercial launch is planned for late 2025 or early 2026 , when residents of La Plata will finally have access to their first shopping mall.
The complex is expected not only to revitalize the area but also to enhance the city's overall appeal as a hub for services, consumer goods, and housing . "Our commitment is to design integrative and sustainable developments that not only enhance the environment but also create attractive and vibrant cities, where each brick represents an investment in Argentina's future," said Jorge Cruces, IRSA executive.
