Is There a Crisis in Bakeries? Day-Old Pastries Now on Discount

It seems that now bakeries, in order to avoid losses, are selling day-old pastries with up to a 50% discount. It's pretty clear that prices have risen so much that they’re not selling enough, and they’ve found this way to avoid losing money. By doing this, they’re trying to boost consumption. This phenomenon is especially common in the suburbs, where bakeries offer discounts on day-old pastries. Seems like a pretty smart move, don’t you think?

Honestly, I think it’s a smart move. If the pastries are still good, why not take advantage? With prices going up so much, it makes sense that people aren’t buying like they used to. This way, it helps both the bakeries and the locals. Hopefully more places start doing this instead of just tossing out food. Smart and necessary!

With the crisis, you don't see traditional stuff like cakes or chocolates in bakeries as much anymore, they’re almost a luxury now! To keep up, some bakeries have started offering more variety, like empanadas, tarts, or even added cafes to attract more customers. Even though they’re trying to adapt, the prices of basics like flour and eggs keep going up, and that’s still affecting their profits. It's pretty impressive how bakers are finding ways to survive and keep offering something good, especially in the suburbs, where you’re seeing this trend more.

The problem is some sell day old bread the next day too! It happened to me. They get more desperate. Instead they should lower the price to sell more!

The situation in the bakeries is very bad. I met a woman in Palermo that recently closed down her bakery. 25 years and she finally had to close. She said people don't have money like they did before. Very sad.

But do you expect with Milei and Caputo destroying the economy. It is not just your friend. Look it is happening all over CABA.

I just saw this on Twitter. Is it really true that 16,000 bakeries have shut down since Milei started?

No that can't be right. I don't think there are even that many bakeries in CABA. My friend had to shut down her panaderia and she told me about 2,000 bakeries closed in the past 2 years. I think there are only around 8,000 bakeries in the entire country so no way 16k can be right.

I'm not sure of the numbers but I do notice less and less bakeries. I am actually shocked at the prices they charge for simple pastries and sandwiches now. I notice cafes are mostly empty too except once in a while. They all have to be suffering.

There sure seems to still be a LOT of bakeries in CABA. I'm not sure how they all make it.
There were many more before. I am told the ovens used to make bread take up a lot of energy. I don't know how they will all make it. Not surprised to read that consumption is down so much. No one believes the inflation numbers.

Sad. You talk to many business owners and almost all of them are saying it's worse than they have seen it for 30 years.

Are there discounts for day out bread and pizzas?
Yes many bakeries have discounts for older stuff. More and more bakeries seem to be selling items that aren't fresh. You have to go to the bigger bakeries that have higher volume. Consumption in bakeries is down 45% so even there it is not as busy as before.
