Immigration Wasn’t an Issue in Argentina. Until It Became One - NYT

overstayed

It is a lost cause with Mercosur and now Colombia and Venezuela are going to be permanent members. Wonder how many Americans that are permanent-tourists are going to get caught up in this.

“Under President Milei, Argentina regained control of its borders,” Alejandra Monteoliva, the country’s security minister, said in a recent video.

“If you’re a foreigner and try to enter or remain in Argentina illegally, we will identify you,” she warned in another, “expel you and you will not be able to return to our country.”

It is all just for show. The numbers are still tiny. They deported 620 in 2024 so almost nothing. In January it still was only 5,000 people expelled or denied entry. Even some Americans are getting rejected if they have overstayed multiple times. A few friends got warned on their last trip.

I think it's terrible how Milei is trying to make a big deal about immigration. This makes no sense at all with Argentina being in Mercosur. It literally makes no difference at all with these people being in Argentina. They can easily come over and work and live and study. Many don't have the money for the paperwork process but they are not taking jobs that Argentines would take. Similar to the Mexican and Latino working in the agricultural or construction sector in the USA.

Migration has never been a problem in Argentina like the USA. As the article mentioned in the NYT "They're creating an internal enemy when there isn't one".

Argentines don't' really care much about this. Maybe some die hard Milei supporters. Kind of like the very hard right MAGA it seems like.

Totally agree. For as much tough rhetoric you see in the news and by some hard core Milei people the locals don't seem to care. I honestly have never seen or heard of any issues. Some locals on X make racist "get out of our country" but by and large people here that I noticed are very accepting of all the Colombians, Venezuelans, Bolivians, Peruvians here.

I selfishly liked how easy it was just overstaying but reading some of the horror stories of people getting rejected make me want to take it more seriously.

But why should the government let anyone stay here illegally. Do you like it when people overstay in America? I hear so many are against that. Why it ok in my country?

I don't have a big problem with it as long as people are respectful here. We don't have a problem with people from other country if they are respectful and obey the laws.

i must be missing something. i’ve been coming here for 20 years and have never seen racism. i am really surprised to see colombia included. wow you got me. is this an internet thing hiding in the darkness of opionions with no accountability?

Best bet would be overstay another couple of years and hope Kristina comes back as president
That would be a dream. I don't think it will be Cristina. Her days are done. I wish her husband can come back from grave. Those were excellent times when he was the President. My favorite time.

I wish someone else can step up. All option very bad now. My dream would be for Milei to get impeached and Villarreal to take over. I think she would do much better. I wouldn't mind her.

I don't see any racism here. I do think more crime with some Colombians. Many robbing phones are Colombian. All the Venezuelans I know in BA are very kind people and very hard worker.

You know something. Actually she didn't do everything all wrong. I have so many friends that have been living in Argentina for years illegally. Sure they always would tell me it was legal to overstay and just pay a fee. I told them that may come back to haunt them if they ever wanted to get their DNI here. My wife and I got our DNI. It was not difficult. We just paid.

We use Lorena at Argentina Residency. https://www.argentinaresidency.com/who-we-are.html

She was great! I don't think overstaying or doing border runs is safe anymore. They will give you a warning it seems like but I am reading and hearing from people that know people that got turned away now that kept overstaying. The government isn't stupid and know what you are doing.

i golf with koreans and exercise with black people not to mention from all the south american countries. don’t know where this coming from
Did I miss something? Is someone saying there is racism? Or you mean the article?

I have never seen any racism in Argentina other than some locals mentioning about how Bolvians own all the markets. But I just think it's locals complaining. (they like to complain).

I think some of what Milei is doing is whacky. Trump too for that matter but I recently read something that even Trump thought it was going too far.

I would take a grain of salt with anything you read in the NYT. It was formally a great newspaper and respected but it's all but trash now. I know it was an Opinion piece but I don't think it's an issue and think Milei is making a mistake focusing on this. When you hear Americans or Europeans saying they are having problems staying you know they are focused on the wrong priorities. All of these people spend money on rentals, restaurant, taxis and other things.

Just misplaced priorities.

I am against mass illegal immigration but some of the stuff I was seeing didn't like. I saw a girl that has been living here her whole life. She was flying home from college from the East Coast to Houston visiting her relatives and they deported her. Also ICE showing up at cornfields and raiding construction sides of people that have been working hard. That makes me uncomfortable. I get they shouldn't be here but we have to accept the fact that a lot of jobs aren't getting done without them.

Here in San Diego people line at Home Depot to get daily jobs. No white people want to do these jobs.

My brother is in the agricultural sector in Florida. He owns a few companies. 2 years ago when Florida tried to come hard down on it, many fled Florida. They didn't have enough workers to pick the produce. Fruit and vegetables were literally rotting on the vines. Americans weren't cut out for this stuff. They quickly changed their tune.

Construction sites in Florida also went dead. There was no one to build. It was a mistake to go so hard on the policy. Certainly productive members of society shouldn't be terrorized. They are contributing to the US. I was against Biden/Harris flying in illegals by the plane fulls. That was just wrong.

I am a non left wing person who has worked in Minneapolis where ICE went hog wild. I missed the surge as I was back in Argentina but I have friends who voted for Trump and are blue collar who benefit from scaring latino's from construction sites, they said the surge went too far. While at the same time the Minneapolis leadership and police stoked the fire and are ridiculous(sanctuary city policies). The MN Somalian fraud and all fraudsters(who are oddly legal voting citizens out of the Kirchner playbook) is an insult to the taxpayer, at the same time the US Attorney office lawyers who were prosecuting resigned in mass after they were told to redirect towards prosecuting protesters/antifa. Fraudsters walk free, the FEDS were not at all interested in doing something about prosecuting new fraud investigations, just like the MN government. Gop folks want a cut of the Medical Fraud dollars and the DFL wants immigrants to vote. The people lose. As Bob Dylan said, "don't follow leaders, pay your parking meters."

What went in in Minnesota was an eye opener. It is scary to see the Governor and everyone in on it. It's all one big grift. I got excited when Elon Musk was going to expose it all but the forces of corruption are too powerful and he had to back off.

This kind of scam is happening in each state. Look at California.

I can't imagine what would happen if Harris and Waltz won. We would be in some serious problems.
