How did you become fluent in Argentine Spanish?

Hi everyone! I’m really interested in learning Argentine Spanish, but I’m not sure where to start. Should I focus on standard Spanish first and then learn the Argentine dialect, or dive straight into the local accent and slang?

Also, I’d love recommendations for YouTube channels, podcasts, or other resources that teach Argentine Spanish.

I recommend diving straight into Argentine Spanish. Watch Argentine shows on Netflix and listen to local music, that’s how I learned to sound more natural.

I trained ChatGPT to help me with the characteristics of Argentinian Spanish. It works! You can even have real audio conversations about whatever you want to learn, it’s been super useful for practicing my Spanish this way.

i started with an argentine teacher one one. maybe 1 year. 2 years one on one in phx az with a peruvian. lots of congugations. those classes were twice a week for 2 hours. then found a colombian teacher over skype for 2 times a week for 1 hour. my favorite class. i was writing everything i spoke. i wasn’t hearing it so i started watching spanish news and using duolingo which is from spain. i recomend a strong base in castilian
spanish. the only difference in my opinion in argentine spanish is the ya for ll. you will automatically have that if you start learning there. learning slang as a way of communicating is not learning the language. i dont swear in spanish anywhere. che boludo is a good reference on swearing in argentina. i naturally go back to the argentine accent when. i am old and started from scratch at 52. you are not automatically going to understand the varies topics. medical, real estate, stock market, agriculture, family members relation, i could go one. take you time and enjoy the ride. if it takes 18,000 words to comand a language i probably have 14,000. i dont know what fluent is but i get along fine. my goal is business level.

As a fluent speaker, you have to get away from all things English and connect with only locals in Buenos Aires. Go out with them meet their families, music movies news all in Spanish. I noticed a 180 degree difference when I made this chance vs Just taking the classes!

I am trying to learn as fast as I can. @earlyretirement suggested I learn a lot of vocabulary and words and I have been doing that method and it has really helped to know each word in each room. I made flashcards of everything in a particular room and I don't move on until I learn everything in each room. It has really helped!

That is what I focused on when I started learning. Knowing a lot of words really helps even if you don't get fluent by being able to express everything and knowing vocabulary helped me a lot.

That’s a very popular and effective method! Focusing on vocabulary first is exactly where you should start. Fluency comes later, and having a strong vocabulary foundation makes it much easier to express yourself and understand more as you progress.
