Has anyone used kavak.com.ar here to buy an used car?

Hi,

I am looking to purchase a used (or new) car here in CABA. I understand we don't need cars in the city, and I agree, but I am looking to keep one primarily to explore outside CABA on my own.

I have found Kavak, and it sounds like a good used-car platform like overseas ones, and it seems well-funded. They handle all the legal hassles for the buyers. Has anyone here bought from them or spoken to them recently?

Looking for any prior experiences here before I speak to them.

I have not used them here but a close friend of mine used them in Mexico which may or may not be like night and day compared to here. He said it was terrible. I don't think he really understood the concept. He said it's all fully online and digital. He couldn't get help from an actual person. He said every step of the process is handled by a different person and every department had their own representative.

He said he dealt with 10 different people so it wasn't too efficient. But t least it's all via Whatsapp and the occasional phone call.

Just make sure to use another phone number or email if you have a 2nd one. They spam and constantly call over and over.

Interesting that you want a car here. I would think it's more of a pain in the ass. A pain to find parking and it is also expensive and then you have to pay a parking garage to park it at night or risk your wheels getting stolen by morning. It seems like it would be easier to just rent when you need it. You just want one to drive outside once in a while? What's the benefit vs. just renting one on Hertz?

I agree it isn't worth having a car here. My friends that have one barely use them except the weekends. Parking can be expensive here. My neighbor did use Kavak.

It's like Carvana in the US. They handle all the legal paperwork, transfer, verification, cedilla verde, etc. It can be a nightmare to own a car here. I did after I moved here but regretted it and sold it 2 years after I bought it. The hassles of parking even back then weren't worth it. Then my radio got stolen out of my car. And I had to pay a garage to park it. More downsides to positives.

Using a company like that is good because they inspect the cars and they have all of the history of the car. They only sell cars with a clean history. I used a full service place like this when I bought mine and the way to go. Most of the cars have warranties on them. I'm not sure if you're paying cash. Typically the way to go as financing option Is $$$$$ but they have financing options at all of these places. You can also buy extended warranties. Much much safer vs. buying direct from a private individual.

The downside you will deal with is the prices tend to be higher than private sales. Paying a premium for their cars. Just make sure to get the all in price. My neighbor was angry as they told her the all in price and then after they had more legal fees.

Also check out Cazadores de Autos which was the company that I used when I bought mine. There are many good dealers like AutoMarket and AutoLider.

This is great advice if you can just use email only. IIRC, they make you put in a phone number and they constantly call over and over.

Yip , we got our car valued by them about three months ago - they dont let go and keep sending messages.
I just blockd them and will unblock them if I need to chat some time in the future
That is what I do. I have to block them and unblock as needed. It is amazing because when I unblock they seem to call asap so they must be on robo dialer. Calls can be a big nuisance.

The same thing happens here in the US with any car related salesman. They are the worst! I dread buying a new car. Dealerships just call over and over or email. Terrible!

I do rent out occasionally, but it's a hassle and seems pricier when you want to make random plans to go out of CABA. I am aware that the costs might add up, but I am looking to explore these options before I give up on it.

Thanks, I will check out these other dealers as well. 👍

The only reason we have a car is that we live 60 kms from the capital.
If we lived in CABA , we would rent when we needed to go long distances.
Yes! If I lived out in the sticks I would definitely have a car. But all my friends that live out of town further out complain that the traffic has gotten so bad now. I have some friends that live out in Pilar and they said that traffic has gotten terrible.

How long does it take you John to get to the city center?

It depends when I leave . Any time after 11.00 its around an hour

I avoid early morning meetings as traffic can be anything from one hour 30 to 2 hours 30.

Traffic has got a lot worse in the last few months ( January was pretty good though as many were on vacation)

Make a list of all price you pay. Bad idea to have a car in CABA. What neighborhood you live in? Look at parking price of garage! Terrible. Gas expensive, insurance expensive and my registration skyrocket this year!! My insurance price also go up up up.

Terrible idea to buy car here if you live here.

I can't imagine owning a car in BA. Terrible value proposition to me. I hope to one day retire in Buenos Aires and part of what I will look forward to is not having to own a car. I live in Los Angeles where you have to own a car but owning a car is something that I won't look forward to in BA.

Friends that own a car in BA don't use it much during the week. There is no where to park ever. Most times I meet up with them they are always very late and the reason they typically get is they couldn't find a parking spot. A friend that owns a car is paying almost $175 USD per month parking it just in a spot they are renting. That will pay for a lot of Ubers.

Morning and rush hour is just brutal. Many have to go during rush hour and they tell me of 2 hour per way drives and you aren't talking about long distances either. Pilar or Nordelta where they have homes. No thanks. You are wise @GlasgowJohn to avoid rush hour but many can't avoid it. The only thing I like about January in BA was everyone was gone on vacation and traffic wasn't bad.

I'd have to agree with @Avocado. I don't think owning a car in Buenos Aires is a good idea unless maybe you have kids. I lived in BA for 9 years and I had two young kids and it was convenient to go to doctor's appointment and stuff and going out and about as with car seats, strollers, etc. taxis were a pain.

But I didn't even buy it to use in BA. I had a second home in Punta del Este and I'd go there to relax a lot on weekends and would drive it over there and car rentals were insanely expensive there. I didn't use it much at all in Buenos Aires. Maybe on the weekends. I owned a bunch of garage spaces as I owned a lot of apartments back then so parking wasn't an issue. But I just found it was a huge time suck to look for parking, etc.

I can't imagine now where parking is much more expensive and crime is probably higher. I have a ton of local friends that own cars and many of them don't bother because of issues with parking. Also many of them had windows smashed in them or tires stolen. No thanks.

This sounds like the stupidest idea I have ever heard. How often will you take road trips? Renting beats owning in BA. All my friends are constantly complaining about the high taxes and fees owning a car here

I have heard it loud and clear, and I have explained my possible reasoning in my post. Thanks every one or your feedback, really appreciate it.

I would want to discard this option after my own analysis and after considering reasons beyond cost. Let's assume I am Beff Jezos 😀.

So, has anyone recently purchased a new or used car? I would really like to hear from them as well.

From the sounds of things, most expats don't have two nickels to rub together in BA. A few exceptions but if you got the money then go ahead and spend it. You only live once right?

That being said, I still wouldn't want a car in BA. I'm no Jeff Jezos but might be Barren Wuffet and would just get a driver to take me where I needed to go.
