Curious about the September elections in Buenos Aires

Hey everyone!

I’m just curious, what exactly is happening with the elections in Buenos Aires this September? Is it just local or national? What are people voting for, and who’s running? I don’t know much about Argentine politics, so any easy-to-understand explanations would be awesome.

Thanks!

Hey! So in September there will be the PASO elections (Primarias Abiertas Simultáneas y Obligatorias), basically the primaries for all parties. In CABA, people vote for local legislators and sometimes national ones too. The results determine which candidates go to the main elections in October.

Super simple: think of it like the party preliminaries. You pick your favorite candidates within each party, and the winners move on to the general election. Anyone with an Argentine DNI can vote, it’s not just for locals.

Just to give you an idea, the main parties in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) are: Juntos por el Cambio, Unión por la Patria (Cristina Fernández’s party, she’s not running here but supports the candidates), and a few smaller parties. Usually, there are lists with several candidates, not just one person.

I’ve heard that apparently there are some candidates who are famous actors here, and even a few influencers running. Honestly, it makes the whole thing feel a bit less serious. Now I get why a lot of locals say they’re not even bothering to vote this time around. It’s kind of wild seeing politics and celebrity culture mix like that!
