$30 bucks is still expensive for a steak sandwich in BA!

I'm sure you're right because $30 would be a lot for a steak sandwich in the US even. I only meant that the price in USD (using the proper exchange rate) had not gone up since the original post.

Yeah I can get steak sandwiches here in US for less than that. $30 is steep. Prices seem like in USD at the current exchange rate are great but the problem is I don't know how locals manage here with these prices. Salaries are puny even today and prices for many things are at US levels. I'm not sure how this all works out.

Even Ubers now are double of what they were a few months ago which admittedly are cheap by US standards but 70% of locals are still making less than 1 million pesos a month.

This is what I can't figure out. All my friends are struggling in Argentina. Don't get me wrong. They were struggling before too. Seems like a perpetual struggle. 😢

But I can't figure out how the typical Porteño makes it with the low salaries. I make dollars and it is expensive for me. Even taking Ubers back and forth add up. I can't for the life of me comprehend how most make it. My novia doesn't go out to restaurants anymore so she definitely has cut back. I don't believe that 70% are making less than $675 USD per month. No way that can be accurate!

I walk by this place from time to time and it's always full of tourists. None of my local friends are eating $30 dollar sandwiches!

Craig you make a good point that the prices are holding steady in dollars with the exchange rate. Good for those that make dollars but I also can't fathom how locals are making it with these prices. Besides the rich here everyone makes pesos. Salaries have gone up but my girlfriend says not as much as inflation the past few months. I guess as long as salaries keep up with inflation things will work out.

But my friends there are tapped out. Mostly not going out to eat as much as before.

Not cheap but a very good steak sandwich! I came here based on this post this past weekend and very tender sandwich. A lot of tourists and foreigners here. I thought I would avoid the lunch crowd but it was still busy at 4 pm. Very recommended.

I had a few friends the same thing happened. I am not sure if it was because they were obviously foreigners but I read a lot of cases where this happened in Buenos Aires. I also will come across some Google Reviews for BA restaurants where this is happening. Always check your bills to make sure it matches what they are charging.

This also happened to me at the same restaurant! Be careful if they see a gringo that speaks no Spanish they might assume you don't know what the exchange rate is. The bad exchange rate scam is alive and well in BA. I called a few restaurants out and of course they said it was an honest mistake each time.
