Argentines Ditch Dining Out as Milei’s Policies Strengthen Peso

I heard that Pategonia had amazing brew pubs or at least the best in Argentina but a friend went down there and laughed as he had a similar experience. It's great to get some of the names of some in BA as I enjoy trying new beers. Not an expert but fun trying different beers. @CraigM I wouldm't be surprised if they just had the same thing on tap and were hoping people didn't notice. 🤣
Not Patagonia the region... Patagonia the beer brand. You can find it all over BA but they have their own brew pub in Palermo. I would give it 2.5 stars.

That's the thing Craig. A lot of reviews on Google I think are all questionable because I think the locals have different tastes from Americans. I also think Patagonia sucks. Anyone that is a beer lover will have the same reaction you did ordering. But if you talk to locals they will think it is great. I think locals just love hanging out with their bros and beer quality won't matter much. That probably accounts for their bad taste in mixing Coca Cola and fernet and thinking that tastes good! 😛 I would also give Patagonia beer 2 stars. I couldn't tell them apart. Not sure if they genuinely are different or they ran out of the others and all the stuff on tap is the same stuff.
I'll disagree. I quite enjoy fernet, both neat and with Coke, but I also drink Terma Patagonica... My cousin who is married to an argentino says I should've been argentino with my taste in pizza and drinks. 🤣
You definitely could be a local if you like fernet and coke! 😵 Just kidding. But I was surprised my Porteño friends can drink that stuff all night. They would drink it out at the bars and then we would come home at 3 AM and they would pull out 2 liters of coke and make more of it! You do sound like a local if you like the pizza here too. There are a few ok spots but I don't think the pizza here is good. They load up too much gooey cheese. At most places it is disgusting. But the locals think their pizza is the best in the world like their beer and fernet. 🤷‍♂️

The reaction of literally all my friends from Spain or EU that come to BA.

To be fair Larry that is Bariloche which is more expensive than Buenos Aires. My friends just got back from Bariloche and were also complaining. But my American friends and also European friends that visited me in BA were shocked at the prices of things here too.

Prices this weekend at a bunch of places seem like restaurants and stores are increasing prices and inflation is coming back. They feel a devaluation is coming and they are pricing higher already.

This always happens when people think that devaluation is coming. No different in this case. Everyone knows a devaluation is coming so mark up their prices.

Places keep going out of business. As soon as the lease ends they have to close. Add Sheikob's Bagels in Las Cañitas. I just went only to find out they went out of business. Many places are going out of business. Very sad but it seems like this trend will continue.

A sad trend indeed. The problem seems to be that the rentals have drastically gone up and also utilities have skyrocketed and still going up. Hard to make any money.

Jacob - Sheikob's Bagels still has a location on Uriarte.

It's not just the rental prices. That doesn't help but the big factor is just declining sales. Not many are going out to eat compared to before. This restaurant owner tells how it is pre-Milei and post-Milei.

Dang. I just looked at how much a dozen bagels are there and it's $18 USD which makes it more expensive than here in Southern California. Here I can get a baker's dozen of 13 bagels for that price. I noticed my last trip restaurants a lot less full. I went to many of the same places and was interesting to see how slow it was compared to 2 years ago.

Prices keep going up but the fact that one of them already went out of business tells you the direction of things. Not too many locals are going to buy bagels at that price. Probably the only thing saving them is most of the bagels are terrible in BA! They have a decent bagel there.

I have zero sympathy for the business owners with the large declines in customers. They are supposed to adjust their menu to provide more affordable options instead of increasing prices when the number of customers starts to decline. Some places that undertand that are definitely doing better than others. Those places with more local clients are definitely doing better than the ones targeting tourists. Therefore, there are definitely winners and losers, not just losers. I suspect some new and smaller footprint business owners will replace those dinosaurs used to the old ways.

I am not sure if I think that is right. I do find that many companies here don't price with supply and demand in mind. Some seem to expect high profit margins and just want to charge much higher than what they can realistically get. Others don't innovate so you re right there Tony. Many don't seem to invest in their places.

@TonyTigre do you see any places that are doing better than before? I don't know BA too well but everywhere seems to be struggling. What places are doing better? Do you find these current prices fair compared to how much they make in their salaries?

I disagree in some ways. Or I feel sorry for the employees not necessarily the owners. But I still feel for the owners as well. I know many hardworking people that have been affected by this slowdown. Some have tried to adjust their menus but it is impossible they tell me to lower their prices without going out of business. I don't know the industry or know if this is true. I have seen many places struggling.

You are correct Tony it seems like the ones that are struggling the most are targeting tourists which there are definitely less now. But many local spots are also suffering. I do believe new entrants need to innovate more, make their places more appealing and their menus better.

But I am very sad to see what is going on.

Agree with you @TonyTigre. I don't have any sympathy for business owners that don't make their prices competitive. Many would rather sell expensive overly pricey items and sell a few before they would Lower the price, make less per item and sell more volume. Until they understand that I think they will keep going under.

I went to this place based on your posts and it was very meh. Expensive and the ingredients are crap. No wonder their other location went out of business. This one is probably next.

Yeah I went there and was thinking the same thing. People are nuts here at some places paying what they are. It's no wonder places are folding fast.
