Argentina Immigration Changes Coming Affecting Healthcare insurance requirement, Education and Deportation

Times are tough right now, we’re paying the price for decades of decadence and kicking the can down the road, but I want to be here to build the good times to come. That’s why I want to become a citizen. I love this country and want to be able to show it.
Yes very difficult. I went to Spain the past year as easier to make money there. I have family there. Quality for life there better in Argentina. No constant change in price. Rentals also not so expensive except in big city.

I admire foreigners like you Darksider. I wish for all foreigners like you that love my country.

My landlord proposed a 34% increase in July and I’m honestly going to take it because it’s still on the low end in my neighborhood for a 3 bed 2 bath.

So, everything is going up in dollars. 💸
But you no have long term contract?? Are you going month to month or you end 1 year contract? All the things jump up. 34% probably normal. All my friends contract all go up. It scarey if you salary no go up so much.

I live a very humble life and fortunately my expenses are not high but my expenses in dollars have gone up significantly over the past 18 months. Fortunately I don't eat out at restaurants. I wouldn't be able to afford that now.

Fortunately I am not married. I don't have kids and don't pay any private medical insurance. Honestly I wouldn't be able to afford those things.

@Darksider415 do you have children or plan to?

34% jump in rental sounds normal for the inflation going on. I know some friends that had restaurants in CABA and they have to shut down after many decades of having them. The rentals have jumped up but at 200% of what they were paying. Probably a wave of shut downs.

eah, as it is written like that it sounds very stupid. i'm interested to read the actual legal wording to see what will be allowed. it would be a deal-breaker for many people (for instance, my girlfriend with her Rentista residency had to fly back for a funeral, and at the same time cleaned her rental property and moved-in new tenants to pay for her residency needs in Argentina...that obviously shouldn't disqualify someone)
We gotta wait and see what the government puts out. For some reason the immigration attorneys are taking gospel what Adorni put out which is

  • You’ll need two fully uninterrupted and documented years of residency to qualify for citizenship.
  • You no longer automatically get permanent residency as a spouse or parent; you’ll need to prove sufficient ties to the country, have the means to support yourself, and maintain a clean criminal record.

That said, a clean record and proof of ingreso regular (lawful entry/stay) are already official requirements for permanent residency. From what I gather, though, authorities don’t typically ask for evidence of ingreso regular at this time. As for “ties,” having a spouse or family member here would seem like a pretty solid example of that.

So, I’m inclined to think that a lot of the talk around “stricter” requirements is more about optics than actual change. That’s how it reads to me, at least. Worst case, Migraciones might ask for a bit more paperwork—which they already say they can—and things might take a bit longer to process.

I read an article today (maybe it was shared here) about the new measures that have already been passed. Most of them seem focused on targeting criminal activity. So again, I’m hopeful things aren’t as bad as they initially sounded.

I’m at the end of a 1 year contract, so I was lowkey expecting an increase
Same thing happened to us. 50% increase. We balked and hesitated but then we took a look at what else is out there. Many places have gone up. @Darksider415 you are probably like us. We already made it our home and we have a cat and cat proofed it with netting outside of the balconies and hate moving. We just sucked it up but a hard pill to swallow paying that much more in USD.

I am not a fan of this new regulations.

For visas other than the one based on marriage to an Argentine citizen, the requirement for ingreso regular is already in effect. My Argentine partner sees the new measures as largely symbolic—aimed at appealing to right-wing voters who tend to view immigration from countries like Bolivia and Peru negatively. Immigrants from those countries often face greater challenges in demonstrating sufficient financial means.

I contacted Rubilar and he said not to worry about this. Apparently he thinks Milei is a big joke. Definitely not a fan. He said that the entire decree will be declared illegal soon. He said that this is a farce and not to worry about it.
I wouldn't trust anything that guy says. He mainly works with Chinese that have long overstayed illegally. I don't think he is correct. Many other immigration lawyers are worried this time. They won't rule the entire thing unconstitutional. Celano's office said we need to wait and see which are challenged. The new decree he said will be able to be implemented.

Overall I think it is a positive. They are trying to keep out the poor that can't afford to live here and will be a drain on society. It seems like most Argentines I speak to are for this change. More affluent expats can still hire attorneys to help them.

Here's the thing, I'm an immigrant. Not an expat, but yes a foreigner. I pay my taxes here, my income is totally en blanco, and it'll be really annoying to have my petition for citizenship denied because I've spent a total of six weeks outside Argentina in the two years since I got permanent residency. We had options about where to go, and we chose Argentina because we were hopeful about where it's going, despite having compelling options in the EU and Brazil and other Mercosur countries.

I'm all-in on Argentina, My family is all-in on Argentina. We're doing things the right way, and I'd like for us to be able to get citizenship so we can have a voice in how this place is run. I want Argentina to grow and improve and become great, and I don't want to see a return of Peronismo, but I'm also a realist in that this will negatively affect me and my family if it's implemented the way people are saying.

Now, that said, if it really does end up being two years without leaving Argentina, I will probably buckle down and do it anyway, but it's not ideal.
Very big difference between expat and immigrant. We want more immigrants like Darksider!

I am very glad I own my property. I can't imagine paying 34% more from one year to another in rent. Terrible! Better to own a property if you can afford it. I think prices will keep going up.

Given that even immigration attorneys are interpreting it the way I did... It ain't looking good right now. I don't necessarily think the courts will uphold that part, because it is unreasonable, but I think the guidelines are going to tighten.

As I mentioned already, this is really going to piss off a lot of the folks who, in reality, are the kind of immigrants Argentina needs.

edit: The language in the government's official press release isn't quite as strong as what was said in the press conference, so there's hope, but I'm waiting to see how they define residing continuously.

This is how my immigration attorney I spoke to said it would probably be. He said they realy want to be strict on the 2 years. Still I want to see how it shakes out. I don't think it will stay like this. Terrible for people playing by the rules. It is almost impossible for an American to stay without leaving. Most of us have family in the USA or events like weddings or to visit family.

Seems to be some anti tourist/expat sentiment lately. I was in a restaurant and commented how slow it was and the people next to us who were locals said better this way! I don't follow the logic.

I don't see why people from Mercosur have it so much easier and they don't even have any money! I met many such people that are poor but just because they are from a Mercosur country they get automatic with no proof of income.

This sounds like typical Argy inflation. That actually doesn't sound too bad. I see property prices keep going up so rents will keep going up too. Maybe things are different now but my husband told me when he lived there typically it's a certain % of value of the property. Does anyone know what % it is?

why? great opportunity to put the price at a normal level and have tons on business, no? how could someone possibly be losing NOW, with stable prices for many months, compared to them being in business during the hyperinflation past few years when the Peso went from 300 to 1300 per Dollar? seems really contradictory, unless some business owners were using their places as money-laundering sites, or other illegal stuff that isn't as lucrative now.

Rubilar can't prove he's actually won anything, other than his 1991 GeoCities website with a Russian testimony about his services (which cost 6500 USD). he also writes like a moron about Roman Serf Slave Law from 252 CE, so take everything he says with loooooooots of salt. commies gonna commie. he's prolly pissed he can't be as corrupt and make as much money anymore without a Peronist government

no. no there isn't. an Expat is someone who chooses to leave their home country, usually because they are successful and are being stifled where they're from, and they bring talent and business. or they live somewhere for a few years, trying to assimilate, but have "Expatriated" from their home. it's just another way to say immigrant/migrant/etc. - an Expat is anyone living in Argentina for a while, not born in Argentina.

now, if you want to classify the horde of Venezuelans, Bolivians, Peruvians, etc. leaving their shitty governments to find a place with free handouts, free medical care, etc. and are overall parasitic on the host country, that's another topic...but it's not their fault that the commies in charge before have placed such strong incentives for coming there (illegally or legally via MerCoSur). the USA allowing tens of millions to come unchecked is a great example also...i wouldn't call a dude from Guatemala who is illegally in the USA an "Expat" the same way i'd call @BowTiedMara an Expat (selecting an advantageous country to change to, rather than breaking immigration laws).

Still I want to see how it shakes out. I don't think it will stay like this. Terrible for people playing by the rules. It is almost impossible for an American to stay without leaving. Most of us have family in the USA or events like weddings or to visit family.
agreed, what incentive would LLA have to punish those who have been following the existing rules? usually laws are made with a future date, and i hope everyone who has a clean paper trail will be grandfathered in

peronists are just retarded communists, and there are A LOT of them in Buenos Aires, and they are all political NPC zombies who never seem to have to work...here in Mendoza they love tourists and Expats

i see people from MerCoSur at Immigration getting all their stuff with tons of kids and they're obviously destitute with less options where they came from...yet i am bringing money into Argentina and i have to beg and wait a year to see if they'll give me a Rentista 1-year residency 😛 if you wonder why Argentina has tons of resources and oil, yet has been in poverty overall for a century, it's pretty common-sense why

I wondered that too but I was told that the price of everything has been jacked up. That good rent that they had for 2/3 years is now 200% more now. Electricity and gas and water are 300% more. Employees salaries have gone up. All their product costs have gone up. Razor thin margins as it was. It doesn't make it possible to make money I am told now.

That is my beef with him. Most of the people that hire him lose. You don't see many success stories online. Many I put how they waited years and years and just gave up. I can't figure out why someone would use him? Maybe the only option that works with Chinese?

You would think that would be a logical way to do it. But few things are done logically in Argentina so sounds like many are hosed.

hm, but with 80% of the economy being in negro, how could that be? odds of your friends paying 100% of the taxes on their restaurants is about zero percent 😛

the prices of meals at restaurants may be up in BsAs, but in Dollars, not much has changed for me. anyone can go on Carrefour and Libertad and Coto and Makro and look at prices. and restaurants are obviously getting beef/ingredients WAY cheaper than i can get it as a regular person

i suspect more is going on than they say 🙂 but i'm sure there are a small number of businesses that are struggling, especially ones that had an entire business model on relying on the government to make them profitable. but they knew that when they adopted that model...and they could have invested and made insulation upgrades and better systems for the future. /shrug

tons of businesses get wiped-out yearly in the USA, and usually better owners take over. i'm just amazed that restaurants could survive the Peronist hyperinflation and chaos, but NOW suddenly claim things aren't working for them.

Maybe the only option that works with Chinese?
literally the only option for some people. he would have more credibility if he would post his losses and wins, with just basic facts about the cases. for 99% of people there are cheaper and probably better ways. he never impressed me on the old censored forum; writes like a child, and assumes everyone reveres his every word, without providing any evidence for his claims. and he was really stupid when i chatted with him on WhatsApp for a short period. Agustin Beauden in CABA was super impressive, if anyone needs a 1-hour consult on their situation. really intelligent and reasonable. if i had big problems i would have hired him!

we shall see how 2025 goes...overall, LLA is crushing it and i'd give them an A- grade, whereas Trump gets his usual F- for his communistic tyranny. i really hope they don't mandate health insurance in Argentina, like when i would get fined for not buying Obamacare (but the fine was cheaper than the insurance, lol)

I don't know the actual percentage in black. Maybe 80% if you count some black. I am not sure. More and more transactions are with credit cards and not cash here so probably that number is much lower as you can't work in black with debit or credit I don't think.

I am happy you have not experienced inflation in dollars. You must be the only one that I have heard that. I guess if you live a low cost lifestyle but even @sophos has said he lives in the sticks and his cost in dollars has gone up 150% in dollars. Hard to believe your costs have not gone up much but that is great for you.

Agree with you about Rubilar. I contacted him a few years ago and he wanted $6500 for citizenship process. I don't know if that is normal or not. I asked him for references and he said he can't give out for privacy. Thanks for mentioning about Agustin Beauden. Do you have his URL? How much was the 1 hour consult with him?

Trump has been major disappointment. I didn't vote for him. First year I did not vote as both candidates were terrible! What will you do @StatusNomadicus if they mandate health insurance? Something tells me if you do have to your claims of no inflation in USD will go out the door. Mine keeps going up!
