Expat Life: Local Discoveries, Global Connections

70% of workers in Argentina were earning under 550,000 pesos a month in June

I heard Carrefour is desperate to leave Argentina. They are also selling to a local company. Things can't be so good if everyone is racing for the exits.

The strange thing is how some locals wear as a badge of honor how high the prices are here. Puzzling.
Agree with you on this. Some of the prices here are very puzzling. I just paid the equivalent of $25 last night for a medium cheese pizza. Uber prices have jumped up like crazy too. I paid 19,000 pesos from Palermo Soho to Recoleta last night with no traffic.

I get that salaries have gone up since last year but the prices have gone up more than their raises. It is true inflation has slowed down for some things at the supermarket but plenty of stuff keeps going up at shocking rates. My friends keep complaining their kids tuition keeps going up. Most of them are paying $1,000 dollars a month per child now which seems expensive to me. I don't have kids but I wouldn't afford to have kids in Buenos Aires.

But are wages really this low? How does the government actually know how much people are making when a majority of the economy seems like it is in black and under the table. My guess is people make much more than official statistics show. I noticed pizza is expensive here for the ingredients.

This bot on X tracks the price differences each month in the canasta basica (food basket) and it says prices in the basket jumped up almost 10% for January alone.
