Designed in Belgium, this system uses lightweight, insulating wooden blocks that assemble without cement, reducing waste and allowing for fast, clean and efficient construction.

A view of the house created with Gablok's Lego-like block system

If you've ever spent hours focused on fitting Lego pieces together , you know how rewarding it can be to see a solid structure formed from simple elements. This playful, intuitive, and precise logic inspired a real-life construction system that is now gaining ground in Europe and seeks to transform the way homes are built: fast, clean, and hassle-free.

The method is called Gablok , and was created in Belgium with a clear premise: to allow anyone to build their house in a simple, efficient and ecological way, as if they were putting together a set of blocks.

Like Lego pieces, the blocks developed by the Belgian firm Gablok allow a house to be built in six days with a self-taught system that reduces the amount of waste.

The heart of the system is prefabricated modular wooden blocks that fit together without cement, mortar, or cranes. All you need is a ladder, a screwdriver, and following the instructions. With this technology, a 200 m² house can be built in just one week.

A kit to build in record time

The proposal, patented in 2018 by Gabriel Lakatos , includes a set of eight basic pieces for raising walls and floors, along with precisely fitted joints.

The blocks are made from OSB (oriented strand board) panels and a graphitized expanded polystyrene (EPS) core, making them lightweight, durable, and ideal for thermal and acoustic insulation . They weigh less than 9 kilos and come in three lengths: 30, 60, and 90 centimeters, although they always maintain the same height and depth.

Energy efficiency and low environmental impact

Thanks to their design, the thermal conductivity of the blocks is only 0.15 W/m²K. This translates into more efficient homes, with less need for heating or cooling.

Furthermore, the materials were chosen for their low environmental impact : EPS is inert and recyclable, and OSB wood can be reused. Together, they reduce waste and align with the logic of circular construction .

This is the step-by-step process

It all starts with plans designed by an architect. Gablok's team then adapts them to their system and creates a 3D model of the home. Four weeks after approval, a complete kit with all the numbered blocks is delivered, ready to be assembled.

In two-story buildings, materials are delivered in three stages: ground floor, mezzanine, and upper floor, which facilitates on-site logistics. And since complex tools and heavy machinery are not required, assembly is accessible and quieter than a conventional construction site .

While the structure can be assembled in seven days, the complete completion of the house takes around four months.

Adaptable, comfortable and safe

The blocks are ergonomic and easy to handle, improving safety on site and reducing physical strain . The system can be used for family homes as well as for extensions, studios, workshops, or garages.

Gablok also follows the trend of off-site prefabrication: parts are produced in a factory and assembled directly on-site , ensuring greater precision in costs and measurements, and less waste.

Ultimately, this Belgian innovation proves that construction games inspire not only creativity but also real housing solutions. With blocks that fit together easily and structures that can be erected in record time, building a house is no longer an unattainable dream, but a concrete and sustainable possibility.
