What’s Going On With Bariloche’s Snow This Year?

Hey everyone,
Is anyone else following what’s happening in Bariloche this winter? Or not happening, I should say…Apparently, snow levels are way below average, and it’s really affecting the ski season. Some slopes are closed, and the few that are open are using artificial snow. Locals and tourists are pretty frustrated, I saw a few news reports calling it one of the worst winters in years. 😬

It’s a shame, especially for people who planned their winter vacation around skiing or snowboarding. I wonder how much of this is climate change vs. a bad year?

Anyone in Bariloche right now or planning to go? How’s the situation really looking?

It’s not just Bariloche. The Andes overall are seeing lower snow levels year after year. There’s a study from the World Bank that shows how much snowfall has decreased in South America. I hate to say it, but winter sports might become a rare luxury down here sooner than we think.

Yeah, it’s honestly pretty strange, this should be peak winter season in Bariloche, but there’s barely any snow. I’ve seen a ton of TikToks lately from tourists who showed up expecting a winter wonderland and ended up super disappointed. Some slopes are either closed or barely open with artificial snow. Locals are really feeling it too, this time of year is usually packed with skiers and families on winter break, and now businesses are struggling. Everyone’s hoping snow finally hits by the weekend, but so far, it’s been a pretty sad season.

It’s wild to see how much things have changed. Even people who’ve been going every year for decades say they’ve never seen a winter like this.

A friend of mine went about 10 days ago and was complaining about the same thing. Apparently, it’s already snowing now, and there’s a big storm with heavy snow expected this weekend. Hopefully! A lot of people go every year to take advantage of the season… it’s been a weird one this year.
