Many people considering South America evaluate the cost of living —that is, the amount of money they will need to cover their basic expenses—in different countries. Some are more attractive than others, precisely because key aspects such as housing and food are more affordable.
A report from the Numbeo platform periodically compares the cost of living in different cities and countries around the world. It takes into account factors such as housing rent , food prices, and services, allowing for an analysis of which cities are more economical or more expensive to settle in. It is a compilation of 9,437,048 prices entered in 12,227 cities by 843,554 users.

In South America, Paraguay has the lowest cost of living index, while Uruguay is the most expensive country to maintain housing and food. The cost of living in Paraguay reaches a score of 23.02, while in Uruguay it rises to 46.33. Paraguay also has the lowest scores on the food index, with a score of 22.68, while Uruguay 's score is 46.53. Regarding rent, Paraguay scores 8.60, while Uruguay's score is 12.49.
Among the top 10 countries with the lowest cost of living in Latin America , with their respective scores, are:

An interesting fact is that Paraguay is also among the top ten countries with the lowest cost of living , ranking tenth. Brazil, in 21st place, and Colombia, in 24th, are a little further behind .
As for the most expensive countries to live in worldwide, the U.S. Virgin Islands takes first place with a score of 98.43, and Switzerland with 98.36. This indicates that a higher purchasing power is needed to maintain a decent quality of life in these countries.
