New Political Strike by the Aerolíneas Argentinas Pilots’ Union

As a consequence of a new strike led by Pablo Biró of the APLA pilots’ union, Aerolíneas Argentinas announces that it will cancel 22 flights and reschedule another 28 between 6:00 p.m. June 10th (tomorrow) and 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday the 11th. This measure will affect the travel plans of more than 6,000 passengers with flights scheduled during this time frame. The company will face an estimated loss of $1.1 million, including both direct and indirect damages resulting from this action.

Less than 20 days after signing the latest collective bargaining agreement, it is clear that this measure lacks labor-related grounds and instead responds to the political interests of APLA’s union leadership, rather than those of its members. During work meetings held with the union, even after the agreement was signed, no additional urgent demands were presented that would justify such a drastic measure.

Previously, APLA had already threatened to strike before Easter. At that time, and in order to avoid disruptions for passengers, the company acted in good faith, called the union and its representatives for talks, and reached an agreement that deactivated the measure. This new strike highlights the extortionate nature of this practice: while Aerolíneas does everything possible not to harm its passengers, Biró uses them as hostages. With long weekends and the winter season ahead, this dynamic must stop.

In a context where the company achieved, for the first time since its re-nationalization, a positive operating result, the lack of willingness from the union leadership to support a process that gives the company viability becomes evident. This contrasts with their support for previous administrations that recorded annual operating losses of around $400 million.

Aerolíneas Argentinas regrets the inconvenience this situation may cause its passengers and reaffirms its commitment to offering quality service, with operational safety as an unwavering priority.

We have been fortunate it hasn't been too bad with strikes since Milei took over. People probably know if they do they are afuera.
