I Got My Argentine DNI in 47 Days

Wow you did it a long time ago. I wonder if it's easier or tougher now. Tougher to get citizenship now having to stay here 2 years. That is impossible to do without leaving!

In many ways, yes, it has become easier, primarily because the process is finally moving into the digital age. However, "easier" is a bit of a double-edged sword depending on your financial situation and how much you like to travel.

I first got my DNI back in 2002. I just hired an attorney and it was very simple. I didn't do anything. The toughest thing I remember was just getting the paperwork together for the FBI background check and Apostille and some paperwork. Honestly I don't think compared to some countries it's difficult or expensive. Try getting your visa for the USA and it's tougher and takes longer. I renewed 3 times and I got permanent residency and had it ever since.

2 of my kids were born in Argentina and I could have gotten Citizenship like them many years ago but wasn't interested in it. Now, it wouldn't even be worth trying as you must stay in Argentina for 2 years without leaving which would be impossible for me.

There are also downsides to getting a DNI and getting permanent residency. I don't like Argentina's wealth tax but it doesn't seem like Argentina would really know what I had outside of Argentina but I didn't want to take the chance.

I have had my permanent residence here in Argentina for a long time. You are correct there is an asset/wealth tax but I don't know of any expats that declare what they own outside of Argentina. In theory, the IRS is supposed to share with ARCA banking info but I haven't been worried about that. I also own a property in the States but I don't declare that and not paying asset taxes on it.

I doubt many locals are declaring much of what they hold outside of Argentina.
